35i/is. Which one?

So I'm selling my old Z with the aim of treating myself to something a bit newer.

I have narrowed my choices down to another Z4 or an S5. And have narrowed the choice of Z down to the 35i or Is. but is the IS that much better???

Has anyone had experience in both and can point me in the right direction.

Budget is around the high teens, trying to keep under 20k. For that I want a good spec auto under 60k on the clock and must haves are Bluetooth and Sat Nav. Are there any other must have options you can recommend?

Thanks in advance

Hi, are you aware you can't get the 35is with a manual box?
To some drivers that's a line they can't cross :?

It really depends what you are planning to do with the car. The 35i and 35is are mechanically identical, the additional power in the 35is comes from the ECU map. You are essentially paying a large premium for shiny mirrors and a £50 tune with the 35is.

If you intend to remap the car then save your money and go with a 35i. If not then the 35is is worth going for.

Don't forget that adaptive suspension comes as standard on the 35is, it may or may not have been specced on a 35i.

35is

in addition to more horses.

- adaptive suspension
- silver mirrors
- different dash clocks
- different floor mats
- different exhausts (MUCH better sound)
- different rear bumper diffuser
- different inserts in front bumper air intakes

plus other stuff no doubt.

Dont forget M sport only....

SE available in 35i...

Exclusivity should keep residual value better on he 35is too...

Never driven a 35i and don't have to - get the 35is. If nothing else listen to the engine and try to wipe the smile of pure pride off your face if you can. Worth every penny.

Good hunting

I can't comment on the S5 but I did own a 3.0 diesel auto A5 Sport. Looked great but was the most disappointing car I've owned. The ride was firm but it didn't handle in an enjoyable sporty way at all. The steering had also very little. It seemed to have all the drawbacks of a sporty car but without the fun aspect. I also found the driver ergonomics/controls very strange and fiddly to use and not very intutive but I am getting old so nothing feels intuitive these days

Never tried a new Z4.

Thats a little bit unfair you got adaptive suspension & DCT and a differant exhaust system so its more than you have suggested

The DCT and adaptive suspension are options on the 35i, not a 35is specific feature. You can spec a 35i to include those options and it still comes out a load cheaper.

Depends if you enjoy a manual or not - 35i can still be had with it, 35is is not a manual.

Except the Z4 isn't for sale anymore so only 2nd hand prices are really relevant now.

I've driven a 35i and owned 2 x 35iS .... I don't anymore so can comment in a more unbiased way than if I still owned it.

For me the 35iS was far nicer. DCT, Adaptive and more bhp was noticeable but not half as much as the difference in the exhaust. With the 35iS you get a standard BMW Sports Exhaust and it sounds superb !!

The 35i is restrained in comparison and tbh on driving it I found it lacking whereas I loved the 35iS the moment I took it out. FWIW without adaptive suspension (though I know it can be spec'd) I found the 35i harsh in comparison to the 35iS in comfort mode.

Just get a 35iS :D
