35i Engine

Hi, I am new on here, so, hi to you all.

I am currently configuring my new 35i and have noticed something interesting. The engine which I think is an N54 has the following key figures attached to it (DCT)
CO2 = 210
0-60 = 5.1
MPG = 31
BHP = 306

However, on the new 2 series M235i, there seems to be a new "variant" of the 35 engine as it has considerably better figures on all four counts above.

So, the dealer is looking into this as he said once a car has a new engine they tend to fit the same new engine to all cars that use it, so, is there any other info known on here please, either a date it is coming to the Z4 or a typical time to be fitted in all models from experience/history please?

Any assistance you can add will be will received. I do want to buy this and if the changes were insignificant, I would just get on with it, but, knowing there is something around the corner is holding me back.

I don't think the change is just around the corner. When I had a one series it took until a facelift in the 3 series for them to get the same engine. As there has just been a facelift in the Z4 I doubt this engine will be coming to the Z4 and if it does it maybe a year or two off and there is chatter that a new Z4 or Z3 may be released in the next few years

Also you need to remember that the 235 is 55kg (around 8 and a half stone!) less than the Z4 which will also impact slightly on figures.
 
Hi, thanks, no, I don't think so as the CO2 is the giveaway as it is something around 176 and an MPG of 37 which is a new engine variant rather than the "is" I think, also, I think it is called an N55 or something?

HP of the 35is is 340 but only 326 in the 235i but that being the current flagship model of the 2 series engine range it will be its possible take on the is without hampering the possibilities of a M2.

Unfortunately if the poster wants more power and quicker 0-60 from a Z4 the 35is is the only option. If they brought the 35i upto the power of the 235i they'd have to up the power of the 35is and it's doubtful that is going to happen.

If CO2 and MPG are a factor in this purchase......your looking at the wrong car. The figures quoted for MPG are not real world figures and you will get less than quoted.
 
Oh right - I'm not too well up on the new 2 series to be honest.

It's such a different type of car to the Z4 anyways - why worry about the engine spec? It is what it is - different car model with a different engine.

Want a Z4 with the 35i setup - there you go.

Correct the N55 engine which is in the F20/21 1 series. And it's been around since 2010 so if BMW were going to introduce it I think they would of by now into the E89 35i. It's currently the engine of the 2013 35is

Are you sure about this? I thought the 35is just used the N54 engine with just a different tune. The N55 engine used in the M235i has a totally different turbo system than the N54 in the Z4. The N54 has twin parallel turbos whilst the N55 has a twin-scroll system from one turbo charger. This is the main reason for better fuel economy.
 
Both the e89 Z4 35i and 35iS have the N54 fitted (iS having a different tune). The new 1/2 series have the N55. The N55 has never been fitted to the e89.
 
Above is correct. Simply put z4 twin turbo. 235i is a single twin scroll turbo. Driving a 235i on the 25th of this month so let you know how it is :)
 
Sorry I had read that the N55 had been introduced for 2013 models but that's clearly tosh. Anyways as I said if mpg and co2 are factors then this is not the car for you. Also the engine has been around since 2010 so not a 'new' engine and you maybe want to point that out to the dealer. I know that not all salespersons keep upto date with the cars they are selling but doesn't fill you with confidence when they don't realise they have cars to sell that already have had that engine before the 235i. The 5 series GT 535i got it first

I don't think the figures in the current car are a show stopper to purchase, it's just that if there was something around the corner that would have improved on a number of key areas, then it may have been worthwhile perhaps to hold on. However, given your feedback, it seems I might as well get on and order a current spec in the safety that it is not "just around the corner".

There's always some development just around the corner, if you do the 'apple' worry, you'll never buy anything always waiting for a better thing. Go for the purchase knowing that a) if there is something coming, you'll get a big discount on this one, b) if there isn't something coming you know you have up to date spec! :)
 
The other thing to consider of course is that currently there are obscene discounts out there on the current car which if they did change the engine etc, it may be they withdraw some of that, so, I guess I take the car as it is, with the c10k savings and enjoy. Nobody knows when or where they are going to stop, reduce, withdraw those discounts so, go now!!!
