Not used over the winter but battery charged and car started/run evey 6 weeks but today looks as if battery will not charge and car starter will not turn. Connected charger direct across battery not from underbonnet terminals. Car is 2009 so maybe battery as had its life. I've read the battery is an AGM gell type and they can be difficult to recharge if volts too low. Anyone revived such a battery, any advice on DIY replacement. Read about the need to register the fitting of a new one, but any consequences if you don't.

I think the battery just won't charge correctly if it's not registered.
I've heard people say it can cause the battery to go pop or that it shortens the life of the battery but I'm not sure myself.

Cheapest way to register your own battery is to use INPA. But if you don't already have a working copy and the correct cables it's a lot of hassle to set up.

There is an android/iphone app called BMWhat that will let you register a new battery on certain cars. If you go down that route check with the developer that the E89 is one of the models he supports.
The app costs £50 and the battery registration addon costs an additional £20 so in my opinion it's not worth the money.

If you don't already have INPA then I think the best option may be to use an independent garage and pay them the 30min labour.
