35i - Cat faulty downpipe replacement

Hi,

First proper post on here in a few years since my last 35i and good to be back.

I recently picked up a 2010 35i and within a few weeks the engine light came up, the car drives fine for all intents and purposes although the idle is a little rough (a passenger wouldn't notice but I certainly do). I took it to Burch Automotive, a well known BMW specialist in my area and it has thrown a 29F5 (Bank 2 Cat below efficiency). The garage believes it probably actually is the Cat although I'm led to believe that lots and lots of other things can trigger this code and it is a bit of a mine field.

A replacement cat is £530 from BMW plus fitting, I may be able to get it cheaper through a friend in the motor trade. This had me looking at AR downpipes as I was going to JB4 the car anyway - does anyone have any experience of them specifically in a Z4 and if so where did you buy them from? From an emissions point of view is it still able to pass an MOT on the rear cats alone?

I would post on the american forum , not sure if links are allowed but there is more tuning related chat for the Z4 here

In particular on downpipes -

You will get answers to anything N54 related here , big tuning presence -

Thanks for the reply and the links, very helpful.

Looks like N54 tuning still has a few AR downpipes kicking around (I heard that AR went bankrupt) but $999+shipping+import makes it quite an expensive tube!

There was a link off e90post to the VRSF website with a set in development for $399 (much more like it) but not available yet. :headbang:

If by chance anyone has a set fitted let me know your feedback, I've seen two videos on Youtube with them fitted but videos are never the best source for info.

I would first check your O2 sensors are OK on bank 2. The only way the ECU knows that the cat is not working efficiently is though the O2 sensors.

Going de-cat will be a pain in the arse for MOT. You can pass with just secondary cats but need to get the car warm first. Also will fail on visual inspection.

Don't bother with JB4, get yourself a proper ECU tune. JB4 is just a rough piggyback unit.
With your DCT car the JB4 will abuse your transmission. Be a costly repair out of warranty!
