M3 for the track, 335is for the road?

What a strange article :|

Disagree anyway, I've driven both and the 335i is very good but an M3 eats it for breakfast in every way...

...except for the rear bumper, which I don't like. Small detail

i read an article where the driver drove through france in an m3, he admitted he could have done the trip quicker in a diesel because he would not have kept stopping to fill it up with fuel, so i suppose the diesel would eat the m3 for breakfast, just a thought.

If you are driving none stop except for fuel stops sure. Otherwise that's irrelevant LOL.

M3 > 335d unless you can't don't want to pay for the petrol IMO. 335d is impressive to drive, just no M3

I have the M3 although it's going this week..... Z4 to follow. All I can say is that the M3 is asolutely awesome what the 335 doesn't have is

wider track
lower gravity due to carbon roof
totally bespoke suspension
better boots
V8 torque
420 bhp
fantastic sound
the 'M' button :-)

and so on.

Ps. Unrestricted mine drives right through to 180 mph. Track of course:-(

just to add 428lb torque
40mpg

Must admit, I'd take the M3 purely on the physical dynamics for a 3 Series.

Rather have my 35i out of those 2 mind! :D

Just a note, the 35is has 450 NM of torque. I guess the 355is has the same!

They both are great cars. Wish BMW could loose the "bumb" in the hood/bonnet, though. Restyle, do something....

Must be some differences in model years here, the E89's started in '09 model year and the old style weren't available after that. '08 was the last year.
I've also heard people mentioning having a 2011 coming or are driving one now, WTF ?? We're barely into 2010 model year so I'm getting just a little confused. :? :? :?

mcbeee, some of the very last M roadsters were available on an 09 plate, registered after Feb 2009 (but built sometime in 2008 and sat around in the showroom).

The 2011 E89 sales start in March with the 35is. Not sure why :idunno:

I see, not very clearly but a bit better than before. I believe our years are based on manufacturers VIN # not the reg date. The next years models show up at the dealers in the later part of the year (sometimes). My '09 was purchased in Nov '09 and there were no '10's anywhere to be seen. The configurator has just switched to the 2010 model now !! I just saw a new '10 35i in the showroom on the weekend and I can't find the new 35is on any sites here yet so the UK seems a little ahead of the game on that. It's possible a person could order one but I haven't tried so can't be sure on that

Someone explained the North American 'model year' thing to me....it's different between every make and some are worse than others.

Apparently it dates back to the US in the 1950s, when the big three would launch a new model every single year with a refresh....not facelifts every few years as it is now. So Everyone eagerly awaited the '57 Chevy, '58 Chevy, etc. Each firm would try and trump the other by launching their new model year earlier and earlier...everyone would want a '59 over a '58. The rules dictate a 2012 Ford Fusion can start production this week as long as it's the same exact model being sold on today's date in 2012. If that car is at all different - wheels, trim, engines, styling - the manufacturer has broken the rules. Apparently 2012 model year Kias are shipping to dealers....which shows it's pretty meaningless.

Good info, one additional item though. The used values of the vehicles is based on various books (black book, red, gold etc) and all use model year as the base so my E89 purchased in Nov would be rated the same value as an identical car purchased in Nov '08 (if available at the time). The fine print would involve condition and mileage but this is why some decent discounts are had at the end of the model year (plus they need to clear the lot to make room for the new ones).

black book values are generally the wholesale values that a dealer would use if you were trading in and are much lower then private sale numbers.

My mate has a 335i convert that is an absolutely fantastic car to drive. It's coming up to 3 years old in April so he's looking to trade up. He's tried an M3 and wasn't overly impressed as a road car, yes it's quick but he didn't find it as comfortable as the 335i. They are different cars and in many ways the 335i -and I'm talking convertibles here, is the better all round car.

He's also looked at an S5 which is a similar price to a new 335i but he won't trade 'down' to an Audi I suspect. He's a bit pee'd off BMW aren't selling the 335is in the UK with the facelift this spring, that would have been his ideal replacement!
