hmmm, my van has failed its MOT and I want out. I think I could manage with a 3 plus towbar.

E90 is beyond comfortable budget but we could stretch
E46 more affordable.
what do I watch out for and which version should I buy?



We do a lot of short journeys, (<7miles to work) so diesel does not really make much sense.

If it's short journeys big diesels are not that efficient. In winter my 4 mile commute into Bristol results in a less than 20 mpg average and thats taking it easy in light traffic
 
What do you consider beyond "comfortable" budget ? :wink:
Sat in my garage I just happen to have a 330d touring with factory fit retractable towbar awaiting a new home 8)

I think petrol suits us better, (<4k miles and short journeys)

but I would consider you to be an A++ vendor and if I was in the market for a diesel you would be my guy. Anyway I would like to spend less really. It looks like I shan't be working much this coming year so I need to keep an eye on the pennies.
 
Sars is right .
The big diesels need to be doing big miles .
Mrs w ran the tourer for 6 months & it was around 27/30 average for her town driving but soon hit high 30's on a run .
Currently we are running a 3.0i X3 that shows 18/20 mpg average town & can :oops: can hit 26/28mpg on a run .
Factor in lower fuel costs & less to go wrong & anyone covering sub 12k a year may as well go for the 4star :wink:
Now my 1.7Cdti Astravan :P 50+ all day everyday so that offsets our gas guzzler :thumbsup:

Love the 330i touring, much better looking than saloon to my eyes.

Only thing I would say is, surely if your doing low mileage and watching the pennies and your looking at a 3.0 then I don't get it :| Why not just go for an econmical car? thats cheap to run lol.

It is difficult to save much petrol if you do a low mileage? I expect unreliability and depreciation will probably have more impact than fuel, tax, and insurance, on an older car.

Maybe I should look at the sums but I would prefer not to.

I guess optimum fuel efficiency in any car is on longer runs, having said that my previous 118d M Sport was pretty good pottering around town, I was getting high 40s on short trips and was 30 quid a year to tax :)

the drive is now starring a dark green 530i SE 130k 2001 in perfect condition, never seen a winters day, summer car owned by a new zealander who has had it garaged every winter since new.

very pleased. :thumbsup:
 
Sounds great. I've had three 5 series touring and I love them. You can get loads in them ( which is why when I forget I've taken the zed to Morrisons I have a small panic ) and they are good for driving around town and eating up the miles when you do long journeys.
