Hhhmmmmmm, whilst boring tv was being watched today (well yesterday now!), had a quick flick through AT. Not that I'm thinking of changing but at some point in the future (a year ish?!) I'm going to need a bigger car, estate size. Doesn't matter if diesel or petrol, manual or auto really. Just roomy, some nice gadgets and fairly pokey for when I'm on my own :) These look great:

Or a Skoda :) :

(I know it's not an estate and a 'Skoda', but it's a BIG hatch and is a good car!)

What do you think...?!

Much prefer the interior on the 530d!! If getting an estate I would favour the nicer interior to power...

Skoda is not a bad choice and those 2.0tfsi engines are great! however its just a little bland, going from the Z4M to that would be soul destroying for me (but im only young so maybe thats why)

also DONT get the boat trim....

Boat trim...?!

Yes I agree, the 5 series touring is a mighty fine looking vehicle, inside and out.

Interesting post Woody. Reckon you and me are both in the same situation as contemplating a nice, big, fast, gadget laden car too. Budgeting around £12-15k and been on AT, PH and Ebay recently looking at 5, 6 and 7 series. Also RS4s, tourings wtc and even XFs. Will be watching your progress woth interest. :D

BTW I once owned a 4 door E46 330i and it was fantastic. Silver with tanin red leather interior and quick as you like :driving:

A plethora of choice on the hot estate front Woody , sometime between now & next may i,m looking to switch the wife's golf for a bigger more useful touring machine for some family euro jaunts next year
Had a facelift 520d sport tourer & hated it , way to underpowered ,not even great MPG & harsh ride on RF's .
looking between £8k & £12k here's my current choices

Love the 7series idea but part of the criteria is the vehicle chosen must be able to get the family from lancashire to the med without bankruptcy :P
the XF's are nice & will continue to plummet in value , well regarded as a ££££ losing machine . think if i was going for that kind of motor i would prefer the Lexus GS

Lexus is cool. On the 7 series if you go for a 730 then the mpg is vastly improved I think.

yea on the 3.0 but 2nd criteria is for the majority of time it will be mrs w's shopping / work / drop teens here there & everywhere mode of transport
i also really like the C sport estates http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2008-58-REG-MERCEDES-C180-SPORT-KOMPRESSOR-C-CLASS-ESTATE-SILVER-51000-MILES-/290825450769?pt=Automobiles_UK&hash=item43b68c3511

For a practical second car (read mountain bike carrier that I wouldn't be precious about) I tend to lean towards B5/B6 audi A4 avants with quattro. Preferably a v6 although the 2.0T would be acceptable (the v8 S4's are getting cheap but very thirsty!)

Plenty of room and good quality plus when it gets icy its got half a chance of getting places unlike rwd bmws on summer tyres. :D

A mate has a 120cdi 200hp vito van for lugging his bikes and stuff around.
it might not be proper quick but it scares the pants off me.

there is 123 too. petrol 3.8 v6, 8sec to 60 but that costs a packet to run.

I have been running a 330i M Sport Touring for a while now and I absolutely love it, I went for the Auto which suits the car a treat. In fact I loved the engine so much I went and bought the Z4!

Just a couple of things to note, even though the engine is similar to the Z4 the car is nowhere near as economical in every day driving.
Sure on a nice long motorway run I get mid 30's but just bobbing down to the shops or the gym or doing the school crawl low teens is normal.

As with all BMW's of this age they are prone to the ABS controller problems, mine is a 57 plate and it failed at 55k miles.

Also get he best spec you can and if it is a sat nav model make sure the iDrive is fully functioning

Apart from that they are easy to live with, comfortable and a hoot to drive as long as you ditch the run flats.

Guys thanks for all your useful and helpful posts here, made for some interesting reading. I probably agree the 530d would be better than the 330i in terms of interior and economy, it is a bit of a barge though! Defo subscribing to this thread, pop back when the time is right. Thanks again :)
