30i vs 35i

I upgraded from a 23i to the 3.0 recently. I was in two minds whether I should upgrade to a 35i but when I drove the 3.0i It was plenty quick enough for so deal done. I too had concerns of costly turbo issues which I know are rare, but they happen. Same with the DCT, they don't fail often but when they do it's serious money. The 3.0i is pretty much bomb proof and I bought one with the sports auto box with paddles so it's effortless to drive, has plenty of power and great fun when you hit the sport button. I was also surprised how quick and smooth the gear change was, not as quick as the DCT to be fair, but how quick do you really need to change gear in a road car. I am a couple of months in now and have no regrets in not getting a 35i

Surely buying a car with a decent warranty will calm any turbo failure worries?

For what it's worth, I've got the 35i and have driven roughly 30k miles in it without any issue whatsoever. How many miles are you likely to be putting on the car?

12k pa ish. Will investigate BMW warranty, though car likely to be +5 years old sub 50k miles.

I believe if you reinstate the warranty with BMW they use a third party for it now so you might want to check what your getting for your money.

Yep, if you broke down under the original new car warranty bmw would pay for a hotel for the night.
Under the new scheme they loan you a pop up tent :lol:

However my point was the 28i is cheaper to own more frugal and just as quick - as cost of ownership was an important influence in your decision.

This has already been discussed in other topics. The 28i is 50bhp down on the 35i. That's not "just as quick".
If you want to compare cars with just an ECU tune then the 28i is down over 120bhp on the 35i.

The 28i might get 4 or 5 more mpg, which is great if you sole buying criteria is fuel economy.

The third party warranty is very good. It doesn't feel third party at all, you get all the perks of the manufacturer warranty and I've not seen anyone complain about declined claims yet.

It even includes recovery to the nearest BMW garage in the basic cover.

28i stock is slower than 35i even though it has 50 Bhp less and 100KG = FACT

For abit more information on this the BMW warranty is through Mondial, the only 2 requirements to quallify are the following.

All services done to scheduele and with genuine bmw parts

Modified parts are not covered obviously.

Everything I have read suggests it is good which is why i took it out on my 35is. Time will tell

Your modified 28i still only runs the 1/4 mile in 13.8s.....

The 28i is cheaper to buy, own and run perhaps, but that is obvious. If fuel economy is your primary concern a Honda Civic is a great car....

The fact he has a z4 should tell you fuel economy isn't his prime concern shouldn't it? It could swing the choice of model for some people though
