30i front discs replacement

Looks like I need my front discs replaced, they are extremely rusty on the back.

Couple of questions, what brand is fitted by BMW as oem? Also, I have found a new local Indy that I have asked to quote for the job, what roughly should I expect to pay for new front discs supplied and fitted?

ATE, Bosch, Brembo, ABS are but some OE suppliers

Meyle and Zimmerman are two OE quality alternative suppliers…

No shortage of other aftermarket contenders…

Price of discs depends on spec..the later two piece drill and vented being the most expensive

The cheapest I guess with new pads would be £200 ish with no profit…BMW parts from a high class Indy say £850?

If needings pad's also ? just seen in for sale.... ?

Edit: Scrub that just noticed " 1 series" Doh !

Dec 2009 3.5i August last year bought front discs and pads from Cotwolds for £403 delivered . Indi charged me £72 to fit(i hurs labour) At same time was quoted £629 by main dealer (Strastones Doncaster) to supply and fit. £154 (nearly 25%) for cost of a phone call. Went with BMW as original discs had done nearly 75k miles.

Not same car but would expect 3.0i discs and pads to be cheaper.

If the discs are rusty on the back then the caliper isn't sliding on the guide pins correctly which probably means they're corroded.

Seized caliper or seriously failed inside pad…or maybe both… :tumbleweed:

Interesting, here’s a photo of current condition….. maybe they are the original fitment?

Why have I got a picture of you like the flintstones with your feet through the floor to try and slow down because those bloody brakes don’t look like they’ll stop much :o

Hmmm, change of mind..... Looking at the lack of general corrosion I can see a fairly new car that's not had a hard life so I reckon the inboard pad has jammed in its runner somehow. The caliper is still able to pull against it which allows the outboard pad to work (well, keep the disc clean that side at least!)

Or its a super low mileage example stored for long periods in less then very dry condiitions.

It’s a 2009 with 65,000 miles…. she lives outside in all weathers.

Brakes perfectly at present, no pulling to one side etc.

Sounds a fair price to me for a single disc; I've had Brembo many a time for the E46 as it was cheapest. Check the diameter is correct tho; errors in the ECP/CP4L databases aren't unknown.

Thanks Scott,

Can someone please confirm the correct front / rear sizes for me…. Am I correct in saying the front discs are bigger at 330mm, whilst the rears are 300mm?

330 x 24 300 x 20

Both ventilated as a minimum

Thanks Peter, confirms my suspicion the ECP ones above are cheap because they are actually 300mm (even though they appear in the front discs section) so looks like another error on their site as flagged by Scott.

Incidentally the car flew through its MOT yesterday, one advisory….

“Front brake discs worn, pitted or scored, but not seriously weakened”.

Hard to argue with that

300mm applied to 18i, 20i and 23i …
