30.i starter motor or battery?

Morning all

Car electrics seem to work fine (lights, remote unlock, windows etc) and I can hear the fuel pump on the second turn of the key.

But when I try and start the car I get a single click from the solenoid but then nothing else.

I've tried jumping from another car but still the same issue.

Not sure whether this would be the motor itself or just a duff battery and not enough power to crank the engine.

Any thoughts welcome on the 'single click' rather than multiple clicks from the solenoid.

Thanks

Did you use decent jump leads and did you leave them on for 5 to10min with the other car with increased revs and the lights on before trying to start it, if so then I’d suspect a duff starter motor.

Decent jump leads yes - but 5-10 mins with increased revs and lights, no. Just attached and turned the donor car on, then tried to start the Z4.

Starter motors die without advance warning had it with my 2.5 fine one day dead the next some blows to it with a hammer shocked it back to life but it died again after a few test starts. Fitted a replacement and starting restored

There seem to be a load of starter motors for our cars on autodoc. Loads of brands I've never heard of. Are these basically all the same?? They all seem to have same power configuration and same number of teeth.

No end of people making a living making parts. Or, in a lot of cases, reselling stuff from China. The cheaper ones will likely work but may not last as long as the original.
