3 warning lights on Dash - Brake Sensor?

20140124_114051_zps0dad518c.jpg

The above three warning lights have appeared on my wife's 2003 2.5 Z4. They stay on permanently, I have tried charging the battery and resetting by pressing in the DSC button while starting car but no joy :(

I'd be grateful if anybody can suggest what might be the problem - my first thought is a brake sensor.

Any suggestions or suggested fix appreciated thanks

Have you got a scanner to check if there are any error codes stored?

If you do a search there are a few threads on this fault.

Here's one which might be of help http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=42396

Hope you get it sorted soon

No, not brake sensor, that is the one ( at least for the front ) on the left of the top exclamation mark. I know this as I have a faulty one and hence the light is on. I have had the one in the triangle with exclamation mark flicker before when it got a bit slippy ?

Isn't it something to do with steering angle sensor? Is your steering wheel straight when you drive in a straight line?

I think as follows:
DSC warning
Run flat tyre pressure warning
Brake pad wear or sensor failure

Keep your finger on the tyre pressure sensor in the lower central console and the light should go out (as well as checking tyre pressure)

Check the manual - the combination of lights means something different to each of them individually. I had something like this, though it went away next time I started the car. Can't remember what it meant. I'd check my manual but I am comfy on the sofa, sorry :D

I'll be interested in this as I've had these lights on for a few months. In my case nothing to do with the tyre pressure. As I use the car so rarely I thought I would leave it until the MOT and get the garage to investigate it then. But from my research a sensor (probably the ABS one) is the most likely suspect.

IIRC I saw this when I had the steering rack replaced. It was due to the steering angle sensor not being set properly - was a quick visit back to the dealers and all sorted.

Edit: Have you tried turning the wheel from full lock left to full lock right, then back to the centre line and restart the engine? I believe this reset the sensor in older BMWs, but not sure if it works in the Zeds...

Hi,

This looks similar to the problem I had on my E92. It turned out to be the DSC control box. The lights were intermittent at first then permanent (though with this the ABS light was on). Is the hill assist still working?

If it's not the DSC box it could be the ABS sensor.

I had this problem after I replaced the rear discs and pads, reckon some dirt got on the wheel speed sensor because after a good drive it went away !

Thanks Mark - that pic is one of them, but I am sure I've had the three the OP posted too. Will have a shufti at mine in the morning if I remember, as that is the US manual.

Found this thread on Bimmerfest :

I think that the [BRAKE] symbol above is not on our cars - I have never seen it. I think it's represented by the circle with the exclamation mark and two brake pads on either side in the centre. If it is then it may be worth checking your battery - one guys suggests that the three light up because of low voltage to the components rather than the components themselves being the issue. However it would appear the master brake switches were the issue in his case. Whatever they are

I just googled 'BMW warning light combinations' - there are a lot more hits... Apologies if you have already done this :D

Thanks everybody a mixed baggage of replies :)

Sadly I don't have device to identify the fault code :(

I fully charged the battery in case it was running low, but the lights stayed on :( I'll do that google search too, been through it once but may have missed something.

I put winter tyres on in November and yes I did calibrate the tyre pressure. If just that light had come on it would not be a problem :) however I will reset It tomorrow just incase.

I'll try the steering lock reset tomorrow as well, keep my fingers crossed !

My understanding is that the three lights coming on together means something different to them coming on individually, I had thought a sensor of some description as the common denominator and one or two replies suggest a wheel sensor.

Doesn't seem to be a definitive answer here so sadly it's looking like a trip to an independent if it doesn't reset.

Still open to a definitive answer if anybody has one and thanks up to now :)

I had this with mine .... I hit a speed ramp a little to hard and both the dsc and brake warning light came on ( no run flat warning light) so the next day I took it to a local bmw garage who put if on the diagnostics they told me it was a faulty sensor relatively cheap to replace - as the car was under warranty I planned to take it to the garage I bought if from a few days later however the next day when I started the car it had cleared itself - it went back into the garage and they couldn't find anything wrong with it ? I have a friend with a 3 series who told me she has had this happen a couple of times on hers after hitting pot hole etc ....

Hopefully it is something similar or something simple to repair :|
