3 warning lights at the same time, including DSC

Hi Z4 Forum,

I have just had three warning lights come on at the same time, on my way back from the shop (short trip, engine was cold)

It feels like the steering is not auto-centering after going around a corner.

What do you think the problem is and what should I try first? Im thinking it could be related to the battery as I think it might be dieing, I have noticed the start-up off the key is getting slower when its cold in the morning. Also when i turn the key I can see it is struggling more than it used to as it dims the radio display etc, and im sure it didnt use to to this.

Thanks for any wisdom that anyone can provide, if anyone has been experience the same please let me know.

Hopefully its not a pricey one!

Thanks,
Nick

Very common and could be various things.

Sounds like it might be related to the steering angle sensor though. Have you had any work done on the car recently?

Thanks for the reply, nope I have not had anything done recently.

Do you think it could be related to the battery?

I'd never say never, but it's a fairly common issue posted up on the forums here so wouldn't have instantly thought so. First thing to do is read codes and see what it throws up. Do you have the means to do so?

I can confirm that these warning lights are a common trio.
They popped up on my dash during our Scotland road trip. After one particular spirited drive I had parked up for 10 minutes and when I started her up again they all came on. I drove with them on for about 20 minutes and then stopped - when I started up again they disappeared and have never returned. That was back in September.

I dont have anything to read the codes, I do know a garage 30 mins away that has a good setup to read software etc, do you recommend I take it there?

I've had those a couple of times, it's happened when I've been parked half on the curb and dropped the front wheels off a bit aggressively instead of gently when driving off. Next time I start the car all is fine......... until I do it the next time!

Now thats interesting, I'm wondering if that caused my illuminations :scratchhead:

I had this happen a few times a while back. Removed the wheel speed sensor from the back of each hub and cleaned them up. Absolutely caked in filth ! Brushed and airlined the sensor rings also. It's never happened since

i had these 3 lights on just after driving back from mot
it was the steering angle censor, cost me an harm at the steeler
they also had to change the light censor module after having crahed the car during the programming process
1 600€', they will never see me again

I had these symptoms when my ABS pump went duff. Whatever the fault code was at that point made me think that the front offside wheel speed sensor was defective so I replaced it.
However, the lights were still coming on intermittently after replacing the sensor, eventually staying on permanently, probably because the pump was running intermittently up to that point.
The fault codes were 5DF0 or 5DF1 so I removed the pump and sent it off to ECU Testing for a rebuild. Its been fine since then.
DLV's post gives useful information - viewtopic.php?f=2&t=101022

If you get 5DF0 5DF1 it may be stuck brushes in the abs/dsc pump. Can be repaired, don't replace it

I'm pretty sure the ABS pump issue doesn't bring the tyre pressure warning light on. Well, not normally anyway.

Steering angle sensor is also utilised when doing tyre pressure monitoring (in that the ECU won't look at tyre pressure when going around a bend as one wheel spins faster then the other anyway) so that would also be high on my list.

Typical dash error light combinations...

1) DSC + ABS = ABS pump.
2) DSC + handbrake (in yellow) = pressure sensor
3) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in red) = wheel speed sensor.
4) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in yellow) + tyre pressure (in yellow) = steering angle sensor.
5) DSC + ABS + handbrake (in yellow) = ABS pump.
6) DSC (in yellow) - permanently on = steering angle sensor calibration issue / yaw sensor / lat accel sensor.

There are other combinations of faulty sensors which can cause similar lights but the above are the common ones.

Sweepstake time, I’ll take front driver side wheel speed sensor.

My money is on steering angle sensor

My money is on ABS unit, front passenger side wheel speed sensor, and front passenger side wheel speed sensor wiring. I deserve three chances to win some money as mine has done all three of these Trinity Lights causes this year.

Thanks, I'll put the money into the Get Rid Of The Orange Engine Light fund...
