3.5iS- will this be a classic?

Pretty clear then, no it's not a classic, and never will be unlike an e85. That said, it's a nice car and it's what brings you pleasure., and a big bonus is a happy wife! it makes you happy - job done

I think ultimately any car that is rare will become sort after.
Many years ago (1980 - Reg CBR 996 W) I bought a Fiesta Supersport brand new at £4911 - now I’m told that they sell for £15k
Now that’s not what I would have ever in a month of Sunday’s considered as a potential classic.

My conclusion is who knows!

hi, im' new here, i bought a 2016 440i last year and feel its a bit bland, have been looking at 35iS's, searched the forum for 'N54 reliability', and oh dear...........it sounds like its not good.
Is it really that bad? Nothing that can't be fixed with a retrofit 'official' mod or something?
should i just forget about swapping and stick with my B58?

i've slightly fallen for the 35iS and could swap mine for one with a few grand to spare, but i care more about reliability......

are the cases of unreliability with the N54 down to poor maintenance or is it just inherently crap?

The 35is is a fantastic car, the N54 it's self is a great engine, solidly built, forged internals etc, it's generally the things around it that seem to fail. High pressure fuel pump is one that is thrown around alot, around £750, Injectors are another one, around £1000 for a full set, turbos around £2500. You could always slap a BMW approved warranty on if these issues worry you, circa £500 per annum for a sub 60k mile car

Edit: I believe the HPFP issue is just due to it being a crappy part
Revision 12 of injectors are much better than the rest

Second edit: Also worth noting that there are turbo rebuild / upgrade places that could probably sort your turbos for way less than £2500, IIRC they can also fix the waste gate rattle, but I would imagine there would be a decent amount of labour in getting the turbos off the car
frankly i wouldn't lose a moments sleep about a turbo, i know a company that will fit an inhouse recon turbo with a 3 years guarantee for around 500 sov's all inside one day ..
tbo, the last one he fitted for me it rejuvenated the car so much i thought i might have him fit a new turbo to the next turbo car i get anyway !

That sounds like a great price, care to share the name of the place? :)

sure.

bear in mind my 500 sov's was for 2.0 passat turbo, but you get the idea - as i say, fitted in one day and guaranteed.

Considering you will not be able to buy petrol a few years down the road you could leave the roof off and fill it with soil and flowers, might be nice.
The days of 'classic' cars are essentially over.

Yep, in 50 years cars of today will just be expensive art for people with lots of money and space.
Although there will be companies out there fitting electric engines into whatever you like.

They did it for Prince Harry’s Jag E
But it’s doubtful if it would be worth it for a Z4

They fitted an electric motor in a Maserati Bi Turbo on wheeler dealers a while back and it was quicker than a standard one 0-60

Yes, I watched that Maserati episode recently - but I think it was filmed a while ago.

Very impressed with the end result, but would I want one?

NO!

Did you see that guy Yanni who does a supercar customising show on TV, wraps lambos etc in cheap foil wraps and the like.

He raced his Lambo GT, nearly 800BHP from 30 - 110 mph against a tesla and lost!!! I mean really lost, you will find it on youtube.

Just shows how a car like a lambo at the pinnacle of modern IC engine technology is nothing compared to a family saloon at the very birth of a new technology.
Supercars are a bit embarrassing now I find, all this popping and farting out of the exhaust, bodywork designed by a 5 yr old boy, £300k plus and they cannot beat a battery powered 4 door family saloon!!!!!!

I am so sorry to bring this prickly subject up again. I mentioned to my wife about chopping it in for the new up and coming Z4 but she is totally in love with our car and is convinced with the rarity of this model it's worth keeping it as our forever car and settle up the finance on it in 18 months time! With its drop dead good looks and designed inside and out by two female designers she feels in 10 years time it will still look good and will become a desirable car. What do you think and be brutally honest please! Thanks
Because BMW imported only 435 of the 35iS, there may not be enough left for it to be a classic, but it'll probably stay desirable. Good shape, good power and good features, all for a fair price.

Is that 435 a verified quantity?
Im not doubting you, I would like to know if I tell anyone i could back up my statement if they question me!

You're right to question what I said, because I was wrong. 435 was the number still registered 2 years ago, I believe, so the import number was almost certainly higher. But not much.

Recently, there was a post saying that the figure is now lower, which is not surprising, but I don't know the source.
