3.0SI vs Impreza & evo

Woah i think this thread has gone slightly off topic!
I only mentioned to look out for the Astra in the area as well as the Evo's and Scoob's as looks are decieving :D

The car runs and handles perfectly fine. It's as good on a track as it is in a straight line. Everything has been seen to not just the engine. Suspension, brakes, tyres etc. Every detail has been seen to, to get the best out of it. Hell it's been remapped about 10 times to get it perfect! It hasn't been easy but it's got there in the end. And as bulldog5046 said, having that much power going through the front wheels isn't as bad as some might imagine, as it's been done properly. The Total Vauxhall magazine with it featured will be out at the end of March, if it really bothers you or makes you laugh that much.

He bought the car when he was 20, he's just turned 23. Running a 437hp daily driver at 23, that cost less than 20k doing the work himself, that is faster than most things on the road and gets a higher mpg than my 3.0si Z4 is pretty good i'd say!!

I'd rather not talk about it now anyway, as we split up last month...

Sorry to hear that, although you should know this place well enough to know you've just invited invitiations for advances from all the pervs on z4-forum... :D

(Adopting my best Joey-from-Friends accent: How you doin'?)

I once encountered an Evolution 7, 8 or 9 (cant really tell those apart i'm afraid) in a dual carriageway. We drive slowly side by side for a while and i motion him for us to give it some knowing full well that he's probably got a couple of hundred more horsepower than the M, anyway stopping at the next traffic lights he revs it heavily, probably after upping the boost or something because the noise was pretty damn louder than before and clouds of exhaust smoke erupted out his big fat exhaust pipe, he then winds down his window and says with a real smug look on his face "Still wanna race?" I laugh and say "Of course I do!" He winds up his window and just drives away looking bewildered. Oh well, these people here have no sense of fun.

Of course i know he's faster, you're always going to find someone who's faster than you. So what? Just have fun with what you have! If you're really obsessed 500hp is simply a few thousand pounds and a phone call to ESS away. :D

been challenged to a race once - him with an open road in front of him... me with a old fud in a corolla in front of me - yeah like that's gonna happen and work. Was some E class Merc - nowt special to look at.

I still made better progress through the traffic than him though :D

I use to love Scoobys when they first started becoming known as there wasn't many around and very fast, but then came woman taking kids to school in a WRX sticker-ed up after that they took a down hill turn with me and many others.

I think the Evo is better as there is less around (where I live) and they aren't sticker-ed up with crap! There was a guy in Rotherham who use to collect Evo's and he had a special edition one which did 0-60 in 3.5secs! but had a oil change every 3-5k lol!

I think I will have to save my penny's up and buy a M5 or a Alpina B5 and also wait 5 years to get insured too, before I start going after Scooby's and Evo's.

I still have a smile on my face driving my Zed though, gets a lot of looks and a lot of other men looking a bit jealous.

Its always fun to see what cars can do in a race on private roads, i wouldnt take on something stupid fast but like to see fast cars give it some. Theres a few Aston Martins around that sound awesome and i love getting them to blast away from me just so i can hear them.

Just because you have a fast car doesnt mean your fast. My girl mate in her 180bhp Supercharged Mk1 MR2 blew away another girl in her Evo 7 at Santa Pod once simply because she couldnt drive.

i had a limited edition impreza and as ashamed as i am to say it but the z4 is flat as a fart compared to that,i also ride fast bikes and the only bike that would leave the impreza is a tuned big sports bike.the impreza wud pass and leave aprilia rsv's,early fireblades and early r1's.the fact is tho that you just cant beat the z4 in every other respect. :D ,biased or wot. :worshipbmw: here's a couple of pics of my impreza and bikes DSC00213.jpg DSC00203.jpg DSC00147.jpg 100_0849.jpg

Before I bought my Z4C I had an EVO VIII MR FQ300 running 400 bhp. I always thought that EVOs had a far less chavvy image attached to them than Subarus although obviously you get a big chav element attached to both with so many older version of both cars being available for pennies these days.

Would recommend an EVO to anyone looking to give the 4WD turbo nutter ship a sail though :D

Stunning car. What made you change for a mere Z4 3.0?

Before the EVO I had an S2000 and after having the EVO for a couple of years I realised that even though its a beast of a car I preferred the 2 seat RWD set up that I'd had before.

When the Z4 Coupe was launched in 2006 I had decided that I'd have one once 2nd hand prices were reasonable so it was the perfect time back at the start of 2008 when the prices took a nose dive.

Was a tough call between a Z4C and a Z4M but after having the 400 bhp in the EVO I came to realise that power isn't all that so plumped for a bit less power but still loads of fun and the superb handling of the Z4C. On every road I had the EVO on the Z4C performs just as well as the EVO in the twisties etc. It really is a very well set up car in 'si' guise.

Plus the running costs of the EVO were pretty heavy on the wallet and the M would have been quite similar I think so the Z4C makes better sense from that point of view too.

I dont think theres anything really that Mere about a 3.0 Z4.

As Billy says having a shed load of power is OK for a while but sometimes makes for a one trick pony of a car. Theres a lot to be said for a good allrounder - FUN should always be paramount in your cars ownership. A two seater with a bit of poke and a good chassis will provide a lot of enjoyment, and the Z4 covers this whilst being relatively cheap to run, reliable AND stylish.

I would love a car with huge power again but know deep down the fun factor does not go up incrementally with the horsepower figure. Chat to anyone whos done an 'experience day' or the like and they will tell you, yeah the lambo was alright but the caterham was awesome.

Back to the original post...

I ran with an evo once...twice actually, but one time in particular... It was a mistake. It was obviously worked, and all my Ram Air and intakes did squat, he walked on me without trying. I walked away with my tail between my legs sadly beaten.

I dont know what he had, but when he got on it, I heard him 100yds away and pulling fast. That thing was loud!

Anyway, being a car and motorcycle driver, as "fast" as the Z4 is, I dont use it for "Scare youself" fast. Its nice, I love it, and wouldn't have anything else right now, however those who ride bikes truly know what "fast" is.

One poster here said that beating a 400hp 4wd car is tough, although I'm not going to say its easy and for sure you'll get off the line first, but if you knew your stuff you'd have no problem. I've pulled off lights with SRT8 Chargers (425hp) and even a 911Turbo (480hp). The turbo was tough and a dead even race...until 120+.

Every bike is different and I know mine is somewhere around the 500hp mark (vs cars that is). I got caught off gear and got roasted by a Z06, but either way that is a car to be reckoned with.

Hopefully I'm looking for one of those BMW S1000RR... maybe the first used bunch coming through the cracks will tickle my fancy.

Any who, stay safe and dont let any street races turn into grudge matches... keep them clean.

My Current Bike, A Honda Superhawk, or a Firestorm for your UK folk.

Well just to help you guys out

My good friend has a 2003 STI JDM Standard 300-320bhp.fair few modifications around £2000-£3000 worth he's has most the complicated (dyno running and fine tuning) done at Power Station? (fairly known tuning company)

Any how’s He push 357BHP on a dyno with 355 FT LB's of torque (that's monster power)and my 3.0 SE (231 bhp...225ft lbs) he will have 3 car lengths at 90mph ..not much but after 100mph he start's to pull fairly hard from me .. up to 140mph he's 7-10 car lengths away..Which me and my mate we consider this getting "smoked" lol

But in standard form it was fast, but probably wouldn’t do me more than 5 car Lengths to 140mph.Still alot.

Anything under 80MPH and he will struggle to pull significant distance on me,

Anyhows what's all this i hear of "it's not worth it you will loose ,don't race"...What you guys only race 1.0 Micra's? and corsa's ? I much prefer having as crack at somthing super fast...I'm allways trying to provoke m3's and the likes..Tried a white GTR the other day but he was being boring :( so what if you loose? it's all part of the fun..

How about those of us who borrow bits from broken bikes....?

Lol, that'll work too...but you know what I meant.

I know what you mean, I tried playing with a Porsche Targa 4S... I swear this had a Race exhaust... I knew it wouldn't even be funny, but just wanted to see what he had... yeah, you can guess what happened.

The z4 just has a nice balance of speed/power... IT has very good torque tho..drive round using no more than 3k and your driving fairly nippy.Impressive engine. It's very quick for a car with just "231bhp" ..down the fact they dyno very stong (around 220-230) And it almost has the same FT lbs of torque as it does BHP and very flat curve... not many naturally aspirated engines can claim this.So it's faster that figures suggest.Plus it's fairly ligth at 1300kg?1350kg? a 330CI isn't a slow car and the Z4 is 200kg ligther.

I'm also biker :P

Shock horror no photos at the moment!

Got a Black 2003 CBR600RR
Full akrapovic Titanium System
Power commander 3
-1 tooth down front sprockets
K/N Air filter

After all the mod's its not to bad now but still have to keep it atleast over 7k for good progress and really over 10k for out and out.But handled very nice on the trackdays i've done. But couldn't touch my 2006 R46 (r6) limited rossie rep.that had really good midrange for a 600 and nice burst over 10k.Had to downgrade to get a car again tho :(

Anyhows there properly quick. For instance the r6 did my mates STI by 12-15 car lengths but the time i was doing 145-150mph..Smokage :P

But it's a bike...like saying a aeroplane is faster than your car..not really fair :P.

Great thread, it's really convincing me that my fellow Z4 owners are just like any other petrol heads - there's no BMW snobbery here :)

Lots of good bike versus car fodder on YouTube, start with this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VXTeGMFf4Ko

I'm surprised everyone is banging on about power when it's fairly irrelevant - torque has the most influence over the 0-60 time. Power mostly determines the vehicles top speed (along with aerodynamics etc). Lets see some torque figures quoted please! :)

My take on this is that the Z4 appeals to a few parts of me. It's luxurious and well built, comfortable and refined. The handling is excellent and that silky smooth straight 6 is a gorgeous engine. Lots of torque and enough power to hit speeds I'll never use. I can live with a 5.9 0-60 and it'll keep raising a grin on the couple of days a month when I stretch the loud pedal enough to realise it. The handling is enough that I'll properly enjoy the next drive along winding country roads without thinking "damn, I wish I were on the bike!".

The bike's still there for silly-acceleration (there's no comparison to the Z4) and for the knee-down exhilaration you just can't get with 4-wheels.

As for tuning cars - A 430bhp Astra isn't my cup of tea but I can completely understand why someone would want to do it and I've shedloads of respect for the guy. That's a labour of love and requires dedication and serious nouse, top bloke. Getting supercar performance from a shopping trolley, how can you not love that?!?

:)

Yeah,no bmw snobbery here.
Like some other posts,i do think evos and imprezas are good cars, and alot are mod'd (heavily),and even std ones can do sub 5sec 0-60 tms. alot of power, etc for a modest cost(2nd hand)/but they have a very chav image.
I Also like to race these sometimes, even tho i know i dont have much chance at times, its fun trying

The z4 3.0i is no slow coach tho,and if remapped(at modest £),can do 5.7 to 60,as the 3.0si does/with 262bhp and 169mph de limited,while still feeling stable and is a qaulity,entertaining car to drive :D

As for tuning astras,etc/i used to badly want a courtney tuned astra turbo with 3-400 bhp!,and did have a very heavily tuned 2.0 cavlr at 1 time, that had over 200bhp,and i kept the body fairly std, even kept the 2.0 badging(was orignly a 2.0 8valve/swapped to a 16v head, turb, etc!)tho would agree, that neds with 1.2 corsa/fiestas,etc with big exhausts do look silly, and can be v annoying,rt up ur ass, wantn a race! no respect for the z(even a 3.0/m).

Give me a z4 3.0(or m) any day.
tho if money was no object,i would def have a lambo muircielargo lp640/best car i have ever driven
