3.0si strange start up sound

Usually bosch. In my case Denso (which should be Japan AFAIK, but it says made in Italy). You can even see a Valeo.
And 300 is not that much if they also install the thing for that price. It's 2hrs of work. And it's tight and tricky to get the batt cable off. And you'll get 2 years of warranty on OEM BMW (rebuilt) unit. You'll have to leave your starter with them though.

I only said both because I'm actually completely clueless and just took RenoRaines word for it haha.

I'd rather just change the entire starter motor anyway if I had to...
 
Car booked in with BMS Surrey to have the starter replaced with a Bosch unit :) Hopefully the end of my "strange noise woes" :)

Any update on this?

I still get the same sound on cold start, local specialist is quoting me £440 for a BMW starter motor including fitting, £300 for an aftermarket unit including fitting.

Annoyingly I still have a warranty on the Z4 which covers the starter motor, though only if it fails... Do you think it's worth asking the local specialist to confirm that it's 'failed' so I can claim on the warranty? I mean, it's not immobilising the car, but it's definitely not working as it should be...
 
Sorry. My started was replaced for a Bosch reconditioned unit and the sound is completely gone, along with a much smoother and consistent first start of the day :) This was definitely the issue, glad I got it started.

£300 seems reasonable, but it should be for a Bosch one and not RTX or similar cheaper option .

Thanks :thumbsup: I'll make sure it's a Bosch unit then when I go to get it replaced, likely around Christmas.

Weirdly, today was the coldest morning I've had in the Z so far (~2 degrees) and it didn't make the sound on startup! A very confusing fault which I definitely do not understand. Maybe it knows I'm trying to fix it, thus hiding :evil: :x :rofl:
