3.0si silver and black engine covers interchangeable?

Hi Guys,

As the title suggests, I was wondering - if a z4 with the N52 engine has the silver engine cover (older models), can it easily be replaced with the black engine cover (newer models)?

I can't tell from pictures - are they essentially the same part ? And is it an easy bolt-off - bolt-on excercise?

Thanks.

I thought the cover on the si models was just different depending on if you had the 2.5si or 3.0so
My previous 2.5si had a black cover and now 3.0si is silver :)

My 2006 2.5si has silver, it's been talked about before and IIRC we never determined a pattern.

I was wondeing about that. My 2007 Coupe is black but I've seen silver.

Yeah I think it is random as I have black in mine but I have seen other 57 plates with silver.

But the question is why would you want to swap it to black? These engines are not exactly pretty to look at.... Just all plastic.... I hardly ever pop my bonnet even.... Maybe once a year.

I think the silver looks better anyway, lifts the engine bay a little

I actually prefer the look of the older engines, i.e. my previous 2004 3.0

have to disagree with you there aquazi, I think the N52 is a great looking modern day engine!

srhutch - great pic! I also think the silver looks good, only just prefer the black really.

still curious to know if they're interchangeable tho...

You can have silver or black, as said above there are lots of members with 2.5si, and 3.0si engines that have silver or black and no pattern on why they have the colour they do.

Agreed, the M54 is a much better looking lump than the N52 IMO. The S54 though....that's something else altogether :)
