3.0si Oil Comsumption

Hi,

Car had a full service end of March (107,000 miles).

End of May I had to put 1L of oil in as the warning / digital oil level thing told me to

Today, I have once again got the warning light and the digital oil level is telling me to put 1L in.

Car is now on 111,000 miles. So in 4000 miles the car has used 2L of oil.

Is this normal? I have never had a car that has used so much oil :o There are no leaks either

That definitely sounds excessive, even by BMW standards!

My 2nd 3.0Si used just under 2 litres over 7,000 miles from 82K to 89K. I never put any in my first one over 8,000 miles, but it had only done 54K when I got it.

From what I have read it may be the CCV set up (Crank Case Ventilation) being bunged up.

As Mr Tidy said. If the CCV is blocked or restricted it can cause gasket failure on various oil seals and high consumption of oil. Look for leaks on your valvatronic motor seal rocker gasket oil sump etc.

Had to put 1 litre in the 3.0 si before I started using Millers Nanodrive.

After using Millers I've never had to put any extra oil in between oil changes for the past 6 years.

Now on Millers Performance.

Check your sump and oil drain access panel as mine (circa 109k) has just started leaking oil under the car a little so booked in at TWG for a new gasket fitting.

Agreed with CCV replacement of not done already.

Ps all my top end leaky oil bits and CCV done at 100k.

I have never had to top up the oil in my E86 in over eight years and 25,000+ miles. At its current yearly mileage rate, it probably gets an oil change every few thousand miles anyway, though (based on time).

1 litre per 2000 miles would not be considered excessive. BMW wouldn't even look at it till its using more than 1 litre per 1000 miles.

Which exact nanodrive oil was this, do you have a link? Couldn't find nanodrive in 5w-30, only 40.

Also, what was the reasoning behind switching to the Performance variant?

Trying to better understand oil usage for the N52 and plan for my next oil service

Switched to 5w-30 Performance as they've stopped making the Nanodrive stuff I believe.

Millers Oils EE Performance C3 5w-30 Fully Synthetic Engine Oil - Oil and Filter Service Pack: 7L + Mahle Original oil filter OX387D1

Put your reg in and it'll tell you all the oil available. Then filter it on Millers.

If that doesn't work give them a call. Always had brilliant service from Opie Oils.

Whilst 1l per 2,000 miles is not excessive, it is clear that your engine either has a leak or is burning oil.

What oil do you use?

FYI I put 10,000 miles on my 3.0si, incl 2 oil changes (1 per 5,000 miles) and it never lost a drop.

Mine uses about 1 litre every 500 track miles (or 200ml per race). Millers Nanotech CFS NT 5W40. Engine on 110k.

My 2.5 uses about a litre every 2-3k miles, no leaks anywhere in the engine, sump or filter housing, never thought anything of it really - they are pretty thirsty engines? Mine has been mapped not sure it that would make any difference, doesn't appear to be burning any oil either - just ticked over 80k.
