3.0Si front disc brake backing plate removal

I've got an annoying rattle on my Coupe that I've traced to the driver's side backing plate on the front brake disc. It's rotten where it bolts on to the hub.

A quick Google seems to suggest that there's no real downside to removing these plates, but that the front wheel bearing has to come out to unbolt it properly. Some people seem to have had success by taking the disc off and going at the backing plate with a pair of tin snips though.

Has anyone done this? Is it possible to do a good job this way?
 
Mine went the same. The aluminium disc and the bolts that are used don’t play well together resulting in a big hole. To remove the plate, you need to take off the hub which contains the bearing, so, disk off then hub. I couldn’t for the life of me get one of the bolts out from the carrier, so rounded the fukker off.... :x ...in the end, I had to snip around the plate to remove it. 2 months later, I ended up renewing the front hubs, as the wheel bearing was noisy. They’re dead cheap anyway. :thumbsup:

Did I read that right, £180 for an alignment? Why did it cost so much! :o

Indeed. From the research I did beforehand, this seemed to be at the higher end of the going rate for a custom four wheel alignment. I had it done at a Porsche specialist called Ninemeister, which is local to me. Their chassis guy used to work with Ayrton Senna, and knows his stuff to say the least. It was a bit of a treat to myself and the car after I got new tyres this time. Definitely wasn't cheap, but it was worth every penny in my opinion. My Coupe drives like a different car now.
