3.0Si Exhaust Modification

Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has done either of these mods before. I am looking to modify this part:

I'm not sure if this is a secondary cat or centre silencer, I believe from reading online it is the latter of the two.

What I am planning on doing is cutting it out and replacing it with a custom made H-Pipe:

Has anyone done this and can comment on sound or performance change? I should if anything very slightly improve performance as it can aid scavenging and help equalise pulses.

OR has anyone simply straight piped it?

Thanks

I bought mine with the straight pipe mod.

Sounds OK. Can't comment on power. Removed in favour of a lighter system (and currently spare).

Hi! I have done a resonator delete (straight piped that section). Performance is no different, better or worse. Sound is much improved, being quite aggressive with a modified backbox. I posted a few sound/video clips of my exhaust on page 5 of my thread.

This is my opinion from the little bit of knowledge I have so take this as you want: The OEM system will be the best tuned system for scavenging as it was properly engineered, and just placing a H/X-pipe where the resonator is doesn't necessarily mean it's at the ideal distance from the exhaust ports for scavenging - you need proper calculations to find that optimal distance. The only think you'll be able to feel in my opinion is the different tones you might get with straight pipes or a cross-over, so focus on sound rather than performance. I paid £60 to get a res delete done, with X-pipes would have cost way more, I also like pops and bangs on lift off, and you don't get as much with a cross-over.

Hi Lucas,

Cheers for the reply, I will definitely check out your videos!

Don’t get wrong it’s definitely about sound, I want to get a bit more but nothing as crazy as straight piping the back box. And I’d like to avoid drone if possible.

I do like pops and bangs but I’d also be fine with a good sound!

Yeah ideally you want the crossover as close to the headers as possible but so long as it’s centre ish on the system that’s fine. By no means am I going for optimal just improved, I will make the H-pipe myself so not worried about cost either. You can buy X pipes cheaply on eBay as well if I find the H is not working.

H and X pipes do help scavenging somewhat, and I will be replacing a resonator that does nothing but divert and impede flow, so I can’t really see how it would do anything but help performance ever so slightly

Hi I have done it on my coupe.

The sound is great, and the engine seems to take turns a bit easily :D

Hi Bobo,

That X-pipe looks great! I have just got basic equipment so I thought an H would be easier for me!

Do you have any videos of the sound ?

I see you replaced that second small box further along, was wondering what the point of that is!

Here’s my progress so far:

you are doing au good job !

Yes I also deleted the small secondary box ;)

I also installed an electric valve to convert in quad exhaust so I can have full straight pipe or "original" backbox mode

I don't suppose you'd want to sell your system with the centre silencer cut out?

I eventually want a custom system, but other things like buying a house keep getting in the way of the budget on that. But your old system would probably keep me satisfied for a short while, plus you're local.

Aw nice one!! How did you do the electric valve? What parts did you use?

It’s a resonator.

I wouldn’t recommend removing it due to drone.

Removed, no drone. Very little difference to sound. Just a bit of a deeper exhaust note at low RPM.
