3.0si exhaust. Boomy?

How do you guys with the 3.0si find the exhaust note?

I previously had the 3.0i (2003) and now have the 3.0si (2006) but the exhaust is a lot louder, it's quite boomy at low revs too, does anybody else find this? I've had a quick look underneath and can't find any obvious blows.
Is there anyway of telling that it is a standard exhaust? It has the twin tailpipes slightly staggered to the shape of the bumper.

The 3.0si I feel is a lot quicker but my god the 3.0i engine/exhaust combo sounded better, in the the 3.0i you could hear the engine a lot more and the exhaust alot less.

I would have thought the muffler/silencer was the same on the pre and facelift?

Loud or boomy is not how I would describe the stock si exhaust. Do you work the night shift at a morgue? :D In my estimation the factory box is not to far above that sound level. The easiest way to tell if you have a stock box. Is to go online to realoem.com input the last 7 of the vin. And compare it to the microfiche drawing.
 
Strange, I thought the silencer boxes were the same. Everyday's a school day (either that or you have aftermarket!)
 
I kind of hope its aftermarket so I can swap it for a standard. Although I do have a warranty in not sure they'd change it for being boomy?
 
Is the sound coming from inside or out ? Could be that someone has removed the sound generator foam from one end or another... Doesn't make it boomy o my ears, but it sounds louder than stock in the cabin.
 
No it's definitely coming from the exhaust. The sound gen foam has been partially removed but to be honest you can hardly hear the engine, maybe I should make a video tommorow so you can see if its like yours..

Si here & all sounds standard & factory ,
only rasp is in sport mode with rising revs :) then even in coupe the exhaust is noticeable
 
mine sounds like a humm when driving normally and a shoom when accelerating.the engine gives off a whirl noise when driving
 
The exhaust is def different in a facelift.

Most aftermarket exausts are listed for the pre not post, with Eissmenn having a different one for the post facelift.

Mine wasnt loud or booming, but had a nice deep rumble... Prob nicer then then sound mine quad gives even :(

This! Something must be amiss with the exhaust - before I removed all foam from the sound generator I'm not sure I could hear it all.
 
The swapsie car I've had, Mr M and myself swear the exhaust sounds different. More boomy or - sorry for being unladylike - farty, like you describe here.
I know this is the E85 you're talking about but thought I'd ask does anyone know if they've modified the box on the 62 E89's?

your right, looking at realoem (although not to scale) the silencer on the facelift looks much smaller
 
Different yes. Sound different? Not too sure. Can't recall anyone ever claiming "My facelift sounds better (or worse) than your pre-facelift." Completely different shape as well. I suspect similar volume (space, not sound) as they fill the same spot in the car. Curiously, facelift auto trans are a different part number than manuals.

I have exact same model (US and UK are the same part number btw). Boomy is not how I would describe it. I find it quite conservative except under hard acceleration. Then I would describe it as a deep solid thrum. OP's is either after market or has been modified internally. I recall a post on some forum where they took out all the insulation from the OEM silencer. They were happy with the result, but I imagine it could result in a boomy sound.

It's going back into the dealer at some point so will mention to them and hope they change it as its under warranty (doubtful!)
 
My 3.0si is similar - much more exhaust noise than the engine. Don't think there's anything wrong with the car, just the way that it is. Friend's 330i is similar.

I wish the straight six was louder, love the noise the rotary in my folks RX-8 makes (ironically, the exhaust in that is silent). I did the sound gen mod but didn't like the fact that the noise died off above 6k, so stuck the foam back in.
