3.0si Engine chatter/ rattle under load

Driving with the windows down in my coupe I can hear a distinctive engine chatter/ rattle (only for a second or two) when I am in gear accellerating from around 1500 rpm to 2000rpm.

It is easily recplicated by for example driving at 30mph in 5th, if I let the revs drop then quickly dab the accelerator I get this engine rattle and can repeat it time and time again, though its easier at slow speeds when passing a building.

Did some searching on other forums and it seems to be suggesting anything from VANOS, DISA or even prop shaft bearing (which was resolved bby tightening the nuts).

Just wondered if anyone else has had this? car is going in to the stealers on Tuesday for a potential alternator whine/ whirr which I am hoping will be sorted under the mondial warranty (almost sounds like I am in reverse gear when I accelerate slowly in 1st or 2nd).

Yes, this is pinging. It's bit high rpms to get pinging though, are you using proper octane fuel? In any case, you get lousy acceleration in that range. If you need to accelerate so badly as to go WOT, as Adam suggested, use a lower gear. This is not really an option. Continuing to force pinging to occur will damage the engine.

Hmmm I am not convinced, one should be able to gently accelerate from 30-35 in fith gear to get to 40mph (with the flow of traffic) without inducing pinging.

I admit my previous post may have implied I was gunning it from low revs, but even with gentle revving to gently increase the speed makes the noise occur.

Hey ho, I will get the garage to take a look at it, my 2003 3.0i never did it with the same sort of driving.

If you are running on the correct fuel, I'd also go for the heat shield. If you have a small split in one, it will resonate at a specific engine RPM and make the noise you are describing.
