3.0si custom exhaust fitted on friday

Sorry to take it back to basics but can someone explain more about this "Sound generator"?

Getting my Z4 next week and like the idea of being able to adjust noise levels as I love a nice powerful engine roar.

Cheers.

A sound generator is a simple enough plastic tube that connects from the engine induction area, through the bulkhead. Inside are 2 pieces of foam that allow a certain amount of engine noise into the cabin.

The idea is in a well silenced and soundproofed car it brings an appropriate amount of engine noise in

It was only fitted to 3.0 models but can be retrofitted to any 6 cyl.

Some people take all or part of the foam out to increase noise levels further.

Look in buy and sell where one is for sale.

BMW's attempt to improve on the "Ultimate Driving Experience" by channeling the intake sound into the passenger compartment of the car. Primarily it is a sound tube which is attached to your intake, which is passed to a diaphragm and then into the passenger compartment through the firewall. The section of hose which connects with the firewall has two foam plugs which can be removed to increase the interior sound level. On the Z4 non-M cars, there appears to be two design variations, the Z4M does not have it to my knowledge. No effect on actual performance, only the perception of performance.
