3.0SI Coupe LIFTERS Ticking

I have a 3.0SI with an N52 engine. It has done 52k and the Ticking lifter issue has recently developed.

I'm assuming I need new exhaust Hydraulic Valve Lifters x12. The car is out of warrantee. Does anyone know where I stand with regards to getting this replaced. Will BMW oblige or is it all on me to pay for this. If so, does anyone know how long this job usually takes or what it could cost.

I will take the car to BMW this week, but just thought i would get some friendly advice first. Thanks.

There is a known problem with the N52 engines, when do you get this ticking noise and how long does it last?

When did the warranty run out, cant be long so I would be looking for some good will on a known issue

See this thread for more info.

Thanks. I have read through quite a lot of that post which is how i worked out what the problem is. I think i will just have to try and be persuasive with them. It seems like in some instances the problem can be solved by changing the valve lifters instead of the cylinder head, which of course would be a lot cheaper so i think i should push for this.

Thanks again,

Nick

From what I understand BMW are only changing the lifters no anyway, guessing as more cars are coming back tey are trying to find a cheaper was of fixing the problem.

I ca only think they have put a non return valve in the lifters. From what I have read it's always the same lifter on the exhaust side IIRC.

Well Shrutch looks like you might have takled this up in an earlier thread

Last 6 weeks I have lived a lot closer to work and now only drive 2 miles there and back, engine doesnt get out of cold indicator on the dash, very very short drives now. And a couple of times in the last few weeks my engine has sounded like a tractor even being able to hear it over a load stereo! Tick tick tickety tock!

Car is now just over 4 years old and 3 months out of Approved Used Warranty. I will push for what I can get in terms of BMW goodwill but has anyone any experience on the cost of fixing the lifters?

A bit pee'd off about this as the car has already spent 3 weeks in the dealer diagnosing dodgy injectors. Trying to convince the dealer there was something wrong was like trying to tell them the sky is blue. Wish I had had had broken springs instead (see watchdog thread) as i could sort that on my driveway!
