Morning all,

This car has nothing to do with me, but I know a few people are looking for Auto Si’s... I spoke to the seller of this car after he’d agreed a deal in principal with the trader now advertising it.

He was an old guy and seemed very genuine, it was a terrible advert on Gumtree which is probably why it was missed by those that were looking.

I know that the trader paid £6.5k for this car, as the chap selling it called me after it was gone to let me know it was no longer available.

Other than that, can’t tell you anything else as not seen the car in person, but the owner I spoke to was starting to struggle to get in and out due to declining health hence the reason for selling - he seemed very genuine.

Looks a nice car and in the right colour, but the lack of heated seats might put many off on a Roadster. There is a lowish miles auto in black near me, no heated seats and the dealer has had it advertised for well over a year. Started at nearly £10k and now under 8k.

Whilst I get that heated seats are a nice to have, for those looking for a car they’re going to SORN over winter I just don’t see this as critical personally.

If the weather is bad enough to not be able to live without heated seats from say May - October then fair enough.

I’ve not interest in what happens with this car, but I think there’s probably a number of good cars getting overlooked just because the seats aren’t heated??

At around £9k (or more) these E85 30si models are now beginning to be more expensive than some comparable E89 30i’s out there. I missed out on a cracking fully specced 30i last week at the same price as this si.

Are they finally becoming the “future classic” many sellers try and spin in their adverts. Is there love for the traditional rag top over the hard bonce of the E89?

In short why would a seller ask more for a good E85 30si than a good E89 30i?

Perhaps the E89's have more faults - roof issues etc, or is it a case of as you hinted the E85 3.0 becoming a classic! Who knows, at least people are buying them.

Why does the new G29 not have a retractable roof?

The usual answer to that question is weight, probably cheaper to manufacture too.

Mind you who would want this....

...purely because they are nothing like the same cars. There probably aren't that many people in the know seeking an E85 who would consider an E89 and vice-versa. The E85 is a much more raw sports car experience - the E89 far more refined. People tend to favour one or the other quite strongly.

It is a low spec car though for sure. Some people can live without the heated seats but it's also missing xenons and the std headlights on a Z4 are dire! Add in the naff aftermarket stereo and I think the dealer may be holding onto it for quite some time.

I’m not suggesting that the car in question is worth the asking price, far from it.

I thought any prospective purchaser might be interested to know what the trader acquired if for, and that the previous owner seemed quite genuine.... that was all really :D

I’m not sure that good 3.0si’s command more than good E89 3.0i, but I do know that good 3.0Si’s are becoming harder to find.

Personally, I think with the number of genuine low mileage examples reducing, those looking for a weekend summer car ‘long term keeper’ should focus more on condition and mileage than whether the car has Zenons or not. To be blunt, all E85’s have pitiful headlights by today’s standards!

IF, and it’s still a big IF, E85’s are recognised as genuine classics at some point In the future then stuff like Zenons, cruise control and the frankly terrible Satnav won’t be having much impact on sale prices!

Finally, asking prices are almost irrelevant.... many cars have been sat around for ages, those priced sensibly sell
