3.0i or si?

Hey guys,

Well, my car is now up for sale and hopefully will be in the market for my Zed in the next few weeks. I'm being the most indecisive person in the world about models and engines so wanted to ask a question or two... My step dad had a 2.0 2005 Z4 which was lovely, however I feel coming from a car with 180bhp that's lighter (RS Clio 182) I'd always feel underwhelmed by the performance.

How noticeable is the difference in the earlier/later 3.0's? I know there's about 30bhp in it, and I'd always just assumed I'd plump for the 3.0si... until I read about the N52 HVA problems which has really got me thinking. Am I risking a £3500+ bill???

I've also started to put together a list of wants, top of which is M-Sport seats which seem like hens teeth in the pre-facelift Z's? To start with I really did NOT want a pre-facelift with those orange front lights and round rears but whilst looking for cars I've come to like them  Scrub01's 56 plate Ruby Black 3.0si is perfect spec for me to be honest, but then saying that I've started looking at the E86 coupe's and fallen in love with them in Montego blue too!!!!

Sorry for my allover the place post, I hope someone can decipher some of it

Hi fella... those retro round lights grow on you & now I wouldn't change mine for the world. Run an 05 3.0 SE (with those M sport seats & yes r dogs danglers) & both the Pre & post facelift cars are very capable - the only thing that's nagging me is the yellow indicators on the front.

I like you decided to save the extra 3.5k by going for a Pre facelift & after attending a couple of meets can assure you there isn't much in it, especially if u fuel up with momentum 99Ron from Tesco

Whichever you choose, bear in mind you will inevitably empty your wallet on modifications, lowering springs, stubby aerial, ///M bumper etc etc. As mentioned above, not a great deal of difference in real terms for every day use - or even flat out driving. But if it's power you want - go for the si.

Oh, an welcome to the forum :)

Cheers guys. I'll try my best to keep mods to a minimum, but it generally doesn't work!!!!! As for the bumpers, hopefully one day it'll be a real ///M.

So are si's going bang not common? Just scared myself reading about them earlier.

I am no expert, but I have a 6 year old Si and it's fine... I drive it very day though, IIRC it is cars that do not get driven very much that most commonly have the problem. Srhutch knows a lot about this, but I am not sure it is as common as you might think.

I like my Si, but as others have said I don't think there's too much in it unless you drive it hard performance wise. The Si Sport variant will give you the M Sport seats and lower suspension - though the latter can be retrofitted easily enough. I hope you find the right one soon, as the weather could be getting a little better now. I hope

Welcome to the forum

EDIT - don't go coupe'd up, a roadster is the only proper Z :D

money you save by buying a prefl you just could save up al little more and buy a ESS supercharger for your prefl 3.0i that'll teach a renault !

The roadster is the best way, coupe is a little short of headroom ... :poke:
My car before my Zed was an 04 Civic Type-R which I loved to bits. That intoxicating V-Tech engine was great. Then I drove a 3.0si Coupe and completely fell in love with the engine but it was a roaster I wanted so I just had to bide my time for one to turn up...

I've never been in a pre facelift Zed. The issues with the 3.0si engine are scary but mine has been used as a daily driver for 3 years and never missed a beat.

Good luck with your search, drop me a pm if you want to inspect mine. It was AMAZING this weekend, roof down :driving: :D ...!

You won't be disappointed with the performance of a 231ps pre-facelift 3.0i. I previously had a ph2 172 and arrived at my Z4 via a CTR and Ibiza Cupra TDI, and the 3.0i combines the best of them all: great performance, torque, soundtrack and amazing economy given the performance.

M Sport seats are an easy retrofit if you can find a pair. I know of a pair that'll be advertised very soon though, so they do come up.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I'm still torn but will feel much happier once I've sold the 182 and have the funds all ready and in place!

I just think I prefer the look of the facelifts and they seem to have more toys/nicer interiors etc. however mine wouldn't be a daily driver though, that's my worry.

If its still for sale once I'm in a buying position I'll be up for a trip to see yours Scrub, even if it is miles away!
