3.0i missfire at idle

This morning when I was setting off to take the Z for its MOT, I started her up and immediately the engine began to shake erratically, this died down after 30 seconds but was there was still an obvious wobble/ judder.

I gingerly commenced my drive (no warning lights had come on, oil levels ok etc). I stayed below 2,000rpm, and after about 2 minutes the engine seemed fine, though I did not push it just to be safe.

Is this a classic coil pack related issue? or is it more likely to be a dirty connection/ plug? I have noticed the car hessitate slightly sometimes when applying power, but nothing like this. It was a cool damp morning also.

WIll have to get a diagnostics check.... :-(

when was the last time the car was moved?

Ive started my car to move it off the drive then not driven it for a while before now - next time it has been horribly rough - put it down to rich fuel mixture from the previous start or something as it soon went. I try not to do that now :D

Sounds like a coil pack to me. If you replace one then i.m.o. replace them all with BOSCH, various prices on E Bay but about £16.50 each.

Mine was doing this today (running a little rough every few seconds) on the way to work... It wasn't violent or anything, but was certainly shaking the car a little, not how a straight six should be! Unfortunately id filled up with Tesco 95 Octane fuel a few days before as all the stations on my route were either closed or didn't have 97/99. It could therefore be bad fuel or indeed as said, a coilpack.

@ Gannet: Funny you should say that actually, as I literaly started it up and moved it a few feet about 3-4 days ago, so could be somethign to do with it. However I have noticed a few times in these past few months that its taken 2-3 attempts at starting (even when warm), and the fact that I do get a slight hesitation at times points to something in the ingition aspect.

@ Alan J, thanks for the info, I did not realise they were that cheap, is it easy to get genuine coils on Ebay? I imagine there are some nasty ones!

I have managed to find a local indy who will do a diagnostics check for £25 which is pretty good I think. May get him to check it for codes anyway in advance of my September road trip.

Kind regards

i know, old thread, but i had exactly the same problem throughout 2009 with the dealer replacing everything that had to do with fuel and ignition pretty much, including the DME. This ended up happening most often just below engine operating temp for me. i.e. say i drive my car for 30 minutes, park, turn it off, start it after about 15 - 30 minutes with the car in neutral and letting off the clutch as soon as you start it, almost guaranteed to misfire.

well the whole time i noticed an engine rattling/slapping sound when i turned off my car while not on the clutch, so i brought my car in for the 15th ish time and i mentioned it and asked if they could look at it.

well after a whole year of going back and forth, replacing all kinds of parts under warranty, they ended up replacing the flywheel. they said there was "excessive play in the flywheel." their explanation was that it was causing the knock sensor to read the rattling from the flywheel as engine knocking and that it would try to correct it in which, ended up doing more harm then good. not sure if that makes sense, but after the repair, i couldn't have been any happier.

maybe you can look into that somehow. i did bring it to another shop and they suggested the throw out bearing, but apparently not. any way, hopefully you've fixed it by now, if not, good luck!!
