After much research ended up doing the mid-box delete mod at my local muffler shop. This involved removing post-cat converter restrictors and the mid-resonator and then welding straight 2.25" pipes to the ends.
Result: minimally louder (gurgle) at idle
approx 25% increased sound at low load revs, more raspy (higher pitch) compared to stock (reminds me of the e46 M3 but less loud)
Much more pronounced growl at load especially low 2-4K revs
Obvious pop and crackle on overrun but no explosions and not obnoxious
Overall, I'm pleased as most bang for the buck mod while keeping things stock and legal. Took the muffler guy 1.5 hrs to do from me driving in to driving out. Aftermarket muffler is also an option, although limited space, and can be added if the sound isn't loud enough
Hope this helps someone, I'll try and get a recording done someday
