Slightly self praising for the forum, but I think it's that sort of detail that sets a lot of the mods on here apart from others... it would have been very easy to think that plate was out of sight and therefore why bother painting it? But these hidden things are always seen at some point and can spoil and otherwise well finished car.

Anyway - before anyone takes exception the post was all tongue in cheek, and despite all the references to hot hartches and Vauxhalls I'm sure those guys enjoy their runs out, have a great social scene, etc. I know they enjoy themsleves on the breakfast meets.

For me it's all about the Zed, sports car experience, RWD, wind in the hair (well when I've no hardtop on) and the people here etc.. I have zero interest in any hot hatch at all. Been there done it.
 
I constantly have arguments with my friends about hot hatches. Don't think there is a single one of them who doesn't want a GTI. I couldn't imagine anything worse. Sure some hatches are fast, maybe fun and low on costs but for me they are not a sports car.

There is nothing like putting the top down, stereo up and foot to the floor until you reach 130mph on a sunny day. Not that I would have ever done that... 8) You just cant get that in a hatch.

Or take it on a sunny drive along the coast with the top down. The smell and feel of fresh cold air at 6am in the morning going to work while the heater is grilling your feet. Can't get that either in a hatchback.

Then the looks of the cars. The Z4 is just plain elegant. It looks good and expensive. A hatch looks like a cheap piece of poopoo. They're not sportscars. They are tincans with a turbocharger.

Lastly RWD, to me there is nothing worse than an understearing car with all the power on the front wheels.

My first thoughts were as yours, CJ. But change the cars and the pictures setup suddenly looked very familiar. I agree, Bradders75, good to see enthusiasts out enjoying their cars. I do sometimes wonder what a group of specced up / modded GT3 owners would make of our efforts.

Come on, CJ, batteries can be interesting, have even seen them posted on here...

I have a softspot for the good ol Cavalier,having owned a 2yr old 1, tastefully modified, for over 6yrs,from 92-99/while also running a brand new (1998) Fiat Bravo Hlx,and an astra van,plus a 2yr old 328 m3 replica at one time too,alongside the cavlr,as i couldnt bring myself to sell it.
The most enjoyable car i have ever owned,as it was (sensibly)lowered,with boge gas shocks,etc,(in my ownership) and cornered as if on rails........that was most enjoyable car ever, til i bought my z4 :D :thumbsup:

Whether you buy a petrol or diesel derivative is your choice but they all come with that certain something that no one else has...six full size seats, good handling, and those looks! Even the later "nose jobs" have still got that certain something.

Love it ! :D Every car no matter how rubbish has an enthusiast! Lad opposite where I live has a battered old Clio and he's out there soon as the weatheer's good polishing, claying and waxing. I think it's great.

BUT a Multipla :headbang: Maybe we should invite them to our first drive this summer? We did one last year with the 350Zs so why not? :)
 
I had cupra, meant to get 35mpg but as it was turbo only managed 27!! They wheel spin in the wet and won't be as good round a corner! The focus is terrible, wheel spins in nearly every gear, astra is worse, golf gti prob the best but not that fast. Small hot hatches wouldn't stand a chance
 
Interesting that the Multipla also has Chris Knott insurance offers and suffers breaking springs. So much for being exclusive

Likewise,its good that ,regardless what the car or how mediocre it is,that there are enthusiasts for it,and no matter what any1 owns,we are all petrolheads at the end of the day,in some shape or form,to some degree :D :driving:

I'm in the rather lucky position of owning both. I find that they both tick seperate boxes, and when I'm driving one on a blast I always feel like the one I'm driving is better then the other... Until I get into the other!

The Hot Hatch is so capable under so many different conditions. My own Golf will destroy my Z4 in a straight line from a standing start, and I would need my head checked to try and get the Z4 into corners at the same speed. Having said that the BMW with the roof down screaming towards 7900rpm makes that seem like a bunch of codswallop! Much more emotive on a "raw" level that the slightly synthetic golf can't touch!
 
My friend recently got the Ford focus st 3. Gave him a drag in my z coupe 3.0si and it beat it by half / full car length, same result after several attempts. Straight 6 sounds so much better than these turbo engines.
 
Yes, everything moves on - I'm sure a current Golf R or Leon Cupra would be quicker than my Z4 Coupe (but at least mine is also a hatch)!

But having had a 2000 MY Leon Cupra in 2003 I know what I would rather be driving (and it definitely wouldn't be anything VAG)!

When I am on hospital duty with my nonagenarian mother in my 325ti (another hatch)! I don't miss the Leon - too inert, torque-steery and stiffly sprung.

For me final answer depends less upon what it does than upon how it does what it does!

Just asking as I'm intending to get a 3.0 in april and I enjoy some nice spirited driving through Wales with my friends during the summer months, would hate to buy something that looks sporty but gets shown up by these turbocharged hot hatches.

Coming from many years in bmw E46's I got sick of thinking my 330ci was quick. It is a fast car until coming up against other quick cars then you realise it Isn't. Don't get me wrong it would hold its own 0-60 in 6.5s as I'd always get a better start in RWD compared with FWD. Many of these cupras, S3, gti, clios, ST,VXR's etc will be tuned up so much. When they launch they cant really put power down good until 3rd gear they just spin there wheels or blame there clutch but then in 3rd will pull away. The reason I sold my 330ci was to get a lighter car the Z4 is like 1400 kg. Since having it in January there hasn't been much that has really embarrassed me only a 911 turbo and Evo 8 so far but they have like 100 bhp more anyway so isn't a good comparison. Most of these are old hatchbacks now but the new ones are seriously quick my neighbour has the new 65 plate leon cupra and let me drive it. They are 280 bhp with 0-60 in 5s same as Z4 3.0i Z4 but being newer just felt more lively. What you need to consider is a lot of them use turbo so once their on full boost and getting a pull on you its hard to come back for straight line speed they will keep pulling away. The power is so much more linear in a bmw with no turbo that's also a good thing as some of these turbo cars might be good to thrash but don't drive well day to day the 6cyl bmw is far better and more reliable. As for grip the Z4 is one of the best driving bmw's I've been in. It's almost like driving a VW R32 or similar Quattro the way you can throw it around and doesn't bite back. The rear always follows the front in other bmw's you slide about a lot as soon as you push hard where these hatchback usually get the better of you down to driving skill. I've just got back from Evo traingle in Wales last bank holliday and it was very good no complaints here even let the mrs have a lap. I've tracked it a few times too my next date is this Friday and I cant wait. Had it on the 1/4 mile strip too there was a golf gti, civic type R and stripped out clios track ready. I spanked them all I'm not sure why I was shocked to be honest. I had a lot of battles with this MX5 turbo we was pushing each other on back to back runs he would win I would win etc. Whenever we compared slips the Z4 always got a brilliant reaction and first 100ft it was more mid race it felt the MX5 would claw it back and sometimes pass me at the finish. There's just not enough torque available as on standard ecu map. He'd always finish at max speed of 104 mph and mine would be 96 mph. Fastest I got was 14.2s he got a 13.6s but both always neck and neck at the finish. Id imagine the later Z4 35is with the twin turbo is a beast and very tunable.

There's not many that cars that can touch a decent modded seat leaon cupra R at santapod seen them destroy most ST,VXR,S3's etc
 
The new leon is definitely not 0-60 in 5 seconds.

With regards to how quick a Z4 3.0i is, I have many friends with new focus st's, 247bhp I believe. The Z4 is on a par with them.

It is also on a par with a Fiesta ST mountune, and quick a bit quicker than a standard Fiesta ST180.
