Can someone advise what the sport button actually does?

The reason I ask is that I am struggling to feel any difference.

My 640d has 4 modes and they are all very different.

If you dont notice the difference then its not working.
On my 3.0si throttle response is very rapid, the auto shifts down and shifts upo later.
It makes the scenery go past quicker and my wife, whos car it is, says I shouldnt thrash it like that.
Code reader is the first stop,

To give you an approximate idea of the throttle response:
In normal, you have to push the pedal 2/3 down to get half the throttle opening on the engine.
To achieve the same half open throttle in Sport, you only need to push the pedal 1/3 of the way down.

This is a very rough guide, just to give you an idea of how it works.

The auto box does indeed hold the gears much longer.

but does it actually do anything worthwhile in a manual car?

Yes, you can clearly feel the more aggressive throttle map and the steering wheel becoming heavier, I actually prefer driving with it activated even just for a commute
