I changed my oil last week ,put 6 litres in checked it later all segments showing to max level . Yesterday did the oil check showed OK but only half of the display segments showing. To me that says the level is half way between low and high. So I put 1/2 litre in thinking that would take it up to full but the level has not changed on the display still showing half way. I thought from low to high was 1 litre of oil. I don't get it.

Do not overfill! I would say trust the dipstick. Measure it correctly! Could be the sensor.
Don't wanna be going the overfill road. I heard a few horror stories on newer BMW's which don't have dipstick and sensor failing reporting not enough oil.

edit: Wait, N52 doesn't have dipstick anymore, right?

That's correct no dipstick, what a stupid idea. I just cant understand why 1/2 litre added shows no level change.

Double-checking the basics. When changing the oil have you taken into account quantity in oil filter? 3.0si N52 takes 6,5l of oil including oil filter. Double check it in users manual.

My advice would be to keep an eye on it and not top up anymore. Keep a spare 1l of oil in the boot if you plan any long journeys.

Based on what you've put in, you're not at risk of being low if there are no leaks, even once the new dry filter was primed. The sensor isn't renowned for being as accurate / reliable as a dipstick!

As long as there's not a low oil warning, then get the engine hot, and get the revs over 4k. This will cycle the vanos system and make sure the oil circulates well. Then try a reading. Keep an eye on it over the next few drives.

Mine always took a while to update for some reason So I wouldn't top up anymore and check it over coming days, my bet would be it'll sort itself out.
