3.0 performance upgrades

Evening,

I was wondering, more out of curiosity than anything, whether anyone has ever costed up performance upgrades to the 3.0 engine?

obviously, with m prices where they are, the answer is a car swap, but does anyone have a list of mods and their suggested gains?

You've answered the question yourself - the ///M is the easy bet.

As performance in the 3.0 increases, you'll need to upgrade the brakes, suspension etc - all ££££

stick with your 3.0i ,.... m/cars 156 mph ..... your 3.0i 155 mph .......... m/car 0to 60 5.9 secs ....... your car 0 to 60 6.3secs ..... 3.0i has same sport suspension as m cars .

For the record, there's quite a bit of difference between the //M suspension & my 3.0i M Sport - steering / brakes / LSD etc... all of which cost 2/3 times as much coz it's a //M

Only thing you can really do is supercharge the 3.0 - search on here, lots of info about it

did you fall asleep part way through that post?!

Oh go on then, I'll be a pedant too....

The 3.0i does 0-62 in 5.9s and 0-60 in 5.7 .......... the 3.0si does 0-62 in 5.7 and 0-60 in 5.5

Now then, where's my anorak.... :exitright:

Auto 3.0si is 5.7 to 60 I think. I resent that 0.2 secs - damn you for slowing me down BMW :x

Yeah I think the autos are slower on the get-go, but surely must be quicker doing a 30-90 through the gears??

Mine certainly does things to the gearbox in that range that I would be terrified of doing manually - so if you floor it at 50mph it'll select the very lowest gear it can, which is 2nd at that speed... Then shifts up faster than I could. I'd be really interested in doing a straight line side-by-side with mine floored from standing in full auto next to a manual, and then a rolling start from about 40, just to see how they compare.

Bit off topic now, but to pull it back a little - first upgrade, heavier right foot :D

A supercharger is the only way to get M-like power.

I actually think an ess will give better then M like power... More torque lower in the power band will make it seem much faster too!

Although you'd also need to get a LSD fitted to get the power on the road.

0-60 (or 62!) between the m and the non m won't be massively different, 0-100 will be quite a gap i'd think, 0-130 even greater....although there's only 1mph in the top speed..

it was more a kind of statto like curiosity that drove the question.

unless i had purchased and mollycoddled a car from new i'd always sell and upgrade.

same with houses - there's always someone one the estate who wacks a 2 storey extension on the back and sticks some pillars to the front and expects top $$$ come sale time.

Hmm..
Simple suggestion, for those with a 3.0i Auto: If you don't have a flappy paddle steering wheel, - Fit 1..
Different beast, to :driving: and a good bit quicker through the box, up and down - than just an Auto box
Whilst not as quick as an ///M, admittedly, - a great hoot, compared to the standard auto box.. :happyclap:

There's no limiter in 5th gear, so top speed is much greater than 156 mph for the M. It's about 168 mph indicated, and it's in the 170's (GPS verified) when delimited.

Yup, heard his before. Most folk'll never do it, but it's nice to know :D
