Hi,

My car sometimes violently jerks in 1st and 2nd when at low revs when I am pulling away or crawling in traffic.
It is more likely in sport mode.

I have learnt to drive around it (by expecting it) in its 3 years of ownership but I wandered if anyone else had come across the same issue ?

It is a 2009 plate with 100k miles so expecting some issues.....

Well at 100k your car deserves a full set of new coils and plugs.
Dodgy coils usually show up with a bit of load in 1st or 2nd.

First try a throttle adaption reset as very easy to do:

1) Sit in car with ignition off
2) Switch ignition to position 2 (do not start engine) and count 10 seconds.
3) After 10 secs, switch ignition off but leave key in. Count another 10 secs.
4) Start car as normally and go for a drive to see if it's fixed the issue.

If that doesn't help I would say a Valvetronic motor reset is worth trying, but you'll need INPA to do it.... https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=113662

Isn't that the valvetronic reset you have just quoted, from what i have seen from YT videos.

Interesting reading the link you gave, my cars rpm jiggles about on first start and settles after after several seconds.
Also i always pull away in sport mode, doesn't like normal when i first move off.

Mine too. Could it be the VANOS settling down as the oil pressure increases ?

Have you scanned it for any error codes stored ?

My old 3.0si used to very occasionally do this in sports mode and funnily enough it happened just once in the e89 a few days ago, I always assumed it was just me being a bit heavy footed feeding in the throttle and a bit too quick off the clutch

No codes showing. I talked with a friendly mechanic who has plenty of experience with BMW's and he suggested first port of call was to replace all the coil packs given the mileage as he had a similar problem with his own M3. He reckoned the hesitation/jerking was so slight, it wasn't enough to throw up an error code. I am going to give it a try.

So had all 6 coil packs replaced and it appears to have done the trick. The jerking has disappeared and pulling away seems a lot smoother.
Thank everyone for your replies.
