3.0 M54,N52 2.5si. Which is quicker?

The 3.0 auto is quicker than my 2.5si manual.
Quicker of the line and then pulls away. My 2.5si runs well and is much quicker than my old M54 2.5i.
I am surprised by this given the cars HP ratings. Even when swapping drivers we get the same results.
I think the 3.0si manual must be a quick car and would like to try one.
 
The 3.0I has more horsepower, so that would be quicker, unless the 2.5si block is massively lighter?
 
3.0i is a little quicker on paper. Auto could make a difference too (unless you're The Stig).

No doubt the 3.0Si is a quick car if you cane it , ive had both & i honestly believe that in auto guise i would be away to 60 as quick as 90% of ///M owners :o yep :oops: they're off so quick & change so fast i doubt that us mere enthusiasts would better it on the clutch :?
 
You'd probably need to take tyres, fuel, engine temp, when was the last service into consideration.

Perhaps you and your son should go to a track and settle this!

It's torque, not horsepower you want, to really push you back into the seat when accelerating & I suspect the 3litre has more of it than the 2.5 :driving:

How are you surprised by this?

The 3 litre has the bigger engine, more horsepower. It also has an auto gearbox so you don't need to think about what your doing apart from planting the accelerator and holding onto the steering wheel with both hands.

What would of been interesting would be a 3.0i auto vs a 3.0si manual
 
^yes but the pfl auto box is just a 5 speed. And I think it gets the edge in this case (so 3.0i auto vs 2.5si man.) because the first 3 gears are very short compared to the manual. Within that small scope it wins the 0-60 by 0,3 seconds (according to bmw's specs). I wouldnt be surprised that the 2.5si would be quicker above say 70mph til 110 or so as gears are then shorter/closely spaced on the manual.
