3.0 coupe v e92 335 coupe v Audi TTS

Morning,

need a new car, criteria are 4 seats (ish), less than 5 years old and I want something fun. Budget say £20k ish +/- £3k. I know an M3 is do-able but I've been there and decided a decent e92 is out of budget if I need less than 5 years old. Which is a prescription.

so I have narrowed my search down, initially I thought 335 was the way forward, however I'm wondering whether the Audi TTS will be a little more fun whilst still fulfilling the seat criteria, the only other option is a cayman, but once again they're a bit $$$.

Anyone got any experience of the above? bit of a dilemma as I have always looked around the 4-5 year old mark and found myself well looked after examples of cars I would otherwise deem to pricey....!

thanks

eta, it needs to be nearer 3 years old really, or the age restriction will kick straight back in. realised my final paragraph made no sense without clarification!

If you need 4 seats forget the tts. Whilst it has back seats they really are not usable.

To be honest a TTS was top of my list but I couldn't bear to spend £20K+ on a 2008 car. They seem to hold their price really well.

Like Stug said, the rear seats are pretty useless if you need to carry adults in the back.

sorry to specify, the seats / age related requirements are car allowance specified, I don't give a monkies' toss if an adult won't squeeze in, so long as there's a seat there somewhere!

Well ive driven both a 335 and a tts. Both are nice enough but pretty bland to be honest. I liked the cayman when i drove that felt a little more 'special' and I nearly bought it. But driving home in my coupe decided that it just wasn't different/special enough to warrant change. . You need to get out and drive some buddy.

... both on sunny & peeing down shite days. AUDI's are very insular & don't have the involvement of many beemers, though I find with a long way to go in yuckie weather makes for a far more relaxed drive & at the end are far more refreshed.

Nice excuse for a few test drives

that's sort of what I was thinking, I find that for 3 months of the year, a dual carriageway drive in a beemer is quite arduous. ideally i'd keep my zed but I can't justify the cost of it sat unused in the garage, and my clio daily is fast reaching the end of its life.

the other aspect is the interior, I saw this and couldn't help but thing bmw's interiors are, sadly, way behind...

They do it in a very nice Samoa Orange.... with rotor alloys

I've had the tts and the BMW 335i there is a picture of it in the other thread.

I loved the 335i. 'Twas a coupe with cream leather and sunroof and paddle shifters.
Engine was awesome. Very powerful machine.

The tts is a nice car to be in. Not as practical. Engine sound not as satisfying. But it pulls really well and is very very stable.

Don't know which to go for.

We have a TTS & had it from new in july 2012 & its now done 45k miles so plenty of experience with it & I also had a E92 M3 so it was nice to compare the two as a 335 weighs in similar to that of the M3.

The TT is lovely to look at in my eyes & feels light & nimble to drive with excellent traction in all weathers its 0 to 60 time of 5.2 secs is impressive too but the performance does tail off at 100mph plus, you do feel the understeer aswell but you soon learn to live with it & I think they sound well enough for a 4 pot tbh.

When I drove the M3 after the TT it felt very heavy & clumsy but felt far more solidly built & I still think that when I get in my 330i after the TT aswell, the engine in the 330i is super smooth & I considered a 335i myself but settled on the 330i.

I am not sure which to choose to be honest as the three cars you mention all have their individual merits.

thanks for the responses...

it is a tricky decision, driven entirely by my coupe not satisfying the criteria laid down in my car allowance policy. first things first is to sell my zed, which will be painful as I really don't want to.

the 335 feels the more practical choice, with a bit more versatility in terms of the back seat capacity, but I worry it will feel (and look) a bit sterile coming from one of my favourite looking cars around.

I've put it off for as long as possible, come the better weather I will put mine up for sale and in the meantime, as suggested, i'll try and get a couple of test drives.

if anyone is after a really tidy coupe I'll put it up for sale in the next month or so.

Lee, have you thought about remapping the TTS?

what does that give? it's a 2l isn't it? would that not be a bit stressed?
I have thought about it many times to be honest & I think it would really benefit from it too as you get good results from it with the turbo & its supposed to help remove the lag because they are very laggy initially & then they really get up & go...I need to get it done! :driving:

I believe a remap gives just over 300bhp & obvious torque benefits too & I was genuinely surprised to read that a remap reduces lag as I thought it would make it worse!

I agree its only a 2.0l & it does run plenty of boost as standard but the guys that have had it done have said to me that all has been well so I think It could be money well spent & we have the S-Tronic twin clutch option so at least you don't have to worry about over revving it.

Yeah Stage 2 (remap, full TBE maybe HP Fuel pump) gives 330bhp.

Not a bad upgrade for £2.5k. Takes you up (almost) to a stock RS

We looked at the RS & I love the thought of that 5 pot turbo but we thought it might be a little too thirsty but with hindsight we may as well have as the TTS has proved pretty juicy anyway & the RS is seriously quick out of the box nevermind once you start tuning it!

My old 200sx was only running a stage 1 tune but it made a massive difference to the way it went & that's the real benefit with turbo cars but I ran it for four years & 40k miles & the next owner blew the turbo up within two weeks so they don't last long once fettled.

You seem to know your stuff regards tuning DPG
