You shouldn't put Autos into Neutral very often as it can starve the Box of oil as it quite often stops or vastly slows down the boxes internal oil pump.

Does advice also apply when the car is stationary? I often engage neutral when stopped in traffic, or at a red light.

I have also read about leaving it in D all the time. When I had my SLK I used to keep it in D from start to finish.

What does the handbook say? I'm sure you'd be OK when stopped at lights etc. but I'm pretty sure that the shunt when it takes up drive is worse that just leaving it in D.

When I was reading up on the auto box on the SLK recently, they mention it should not be put in Neutral when the car is moving, as moving in and out of Drive can seriously damage the transmission.
