2nd-hand Z4 with decent hifi - nearly impossible?

First off, hello to everyone :)

I'm looking to replace my Focus ST with a Z4 roadster after trying a few out at the BMW dealership last week. The spec i'm ideally looking for is, is a 3.0l Z4 Roadster, Manual, with a decent Hifi installed. When I tried a 2.0l Z4 with the standard CD-radio it sounded pretty awful, and I don't think I could live with it (I like my music). I have two questions:

1) The dealer said that Z4s with the SatNav system had better sound than the standard Z4s, is this true? Or is it only those with the upgraded Hifi speakers that offer some improvement? I also test drove one of the Z4 coupes with with Sat Nav, and it did sound better than the Roadster that had no satnav. Maybe I just imagined it though.

2) If I can find a perfect spec Z4, but with the standard sound system, is there anything I can do myself to drastically improve it? Or can BMW retrofit it with decent kit?

Many thanks :)

No it's exactly the same, but I would expect a nav equipped car to be more likely to also have Pro Hifi or DSP.

BMW can retrofit it but it will cost you, there are alternative solutions, there have been some posts recently on it

The standard hi fi, can be upgraded very easily (as on any car), by installing a powered sub bass, (behind passenger seat), a decent power amp and a set of component speakers, belive me the sound will be awesome, better than any factory upgrade. you can then if you wish add a cleen sweep to really liven it up.

see hear for info on a clean sweep http://www.incarexpress.co.uk/view_product.php?partno=CLEANSWEEP

Welcome  cannot help with the ice as i am not that interested in car hi fi but i do like my music on a long drive and mine is more than loud enough but it was fitted with an upgrade from new.

Hi and welcome,

I'm not a great music fan, so can't help with specific comments on upgrading it, but just an observation that of all the things on a Z4 to choose it for, audio would be low on the list at it's one of the easiest and best catered for in the aftermarket to upgrade it and I don't hear anyone speak highly of any of the BMW systems. I also suspect that very few came equiped with the upgraded audio compared to other options.

I would focus on getting the right age/price, colour, engine size, transmission and options that are hard/expensive to retrofit (if you want any) ///M seats, Sat Nav, xenon, etc. and sort the audio out later.

I have the Carver (10 speaker?) system and - though not the best system I've had in a car - it definitely does the job very nicely.
