2nd Car Insurance

Hi, I've tried various searches and haven't come up with anything, so thought I'd ask.

I know a lot of us have our Z as a second car, so I'm sure some of you will have answers for me.

I am going to semi-retire my Z at the end of August, and between now and then I am searching for a 635d, probably around 3 years old to be my daily drive.

I will SORN the Z between the months of October and March (roughly) and only use it when the sun comes out. The 635d will become my daily drive. I only do around 8-9,000 miles a year anyway, so estimate that I will do perhaps 2,000 in the Z and 6,000 in the 6.

I have tried to get some quotes for 2nd car insurance but the premiums have been extortionate. My plan will be to transfer my current insurance with all the ncb to the 6 and start a new limited miles policy for my Z. However, do I need to start from scratch re ncb?

What do you, who have 2 cars do? I certainly don't want to be paying through the nose for this. To give you an idea, my Z is currently just over £400 a year to insure and a quote for the 6 is around £500 a year. Surely a car that is SORN for 6 months should be dirt cheap to insure?

Thanks for any help and pointers.

It may be cheaper to insure both on one policy, and then you don't have to worry about SORN, tax/re-tax, etc.

You may have to use a broker though to get a decent deal.

I have 2 cars, you just have to take the hit, took an extra 2 years to get to full no claims again pn the second car  as they always give you an introductary discount. Tried a multi car policy, but it always ends up dearer that doing it separately. Good hunting

When I bought the Z4M I already had the 530d, and the Z4 was now my first "second car". The 5 was insured with BMW for around £450/yr FC and full NCB. The quotes I were getting for the Z were around £1K as this was a "second policy" and could not use the primary (E60) policy NCB. "More Than" did me a deal on the two, both FC and all the extras for 12 months if I brought over the E60 at the same time to them. I obviously did so and they provided both policies for a total of £700. By far the best quote I'd had and was liekly to get.

give 'classic line' a ring, they will treat the Z4 as a second car and do not require NCD. I got the same price doing that as going to Adrian Flux including my 10 year plus NCD.
