29E0 & 29E1 Fault Codes

Hi Guys

New to this forum, so firstly thanks for letting me jump in here.

Getting 29E0 & 29E1 Codes.

My car has 50,000 miles on the clock.

Over the last few months I have noticed it’s been starting a little rough at times .... high revs then usual at start up but then drops down to normal with the occasional rocking sensation at a stand still.

Throttle response feels more sluggish also.

My big worry is that my fuel consumption has gone up massively even though I’ve been driving it like an old lady!

I’ve had the following work so far:

Walnut blast
Cold NGK Spark Plugs
MAF Sensor Replaced
Cam Cover & Gasket Replaced
Smoke test ( All clear)
BMW diagnostics and program updates

I did have MHD stage 2+ but I’ve taken it off for preventive measures to see if it gives me any truer readings also.

These symptoms have always been there before any of the work or re mapping took place.

I can do a data log using MHD if someone could make sense of the readings.

My mechanic seems to just want to throw parts at it and pray. I’d rather try to get a definitive answer!

Looking at some other experiences and what i haven’t covered / replaced are:

Faulty injectors
HPFP
LPFP
Fuel Filter

Anything else?

Presuming you have a 35i / 35is??
What year is the car?

For info certain parts, HPFP for example are warrantied for ten years but BMW wont tell you that unless you ask!!!!

I thought the ten year guarantee was only for the American market Mark? :?

I have never heard that before! It would seem a little dodgy only providing that in one country and not another, might be true but I cannot see any reason why that would be the case.
 
Class action lawsuits is the reason! Agree, I was under the impression that applied to US market only as well. Same thing for injectors. BMW uk tend to take a more individual case stance on ‘goodwill’.

I can’t see any of the more common stuff like hpfp or injectors having such a negative impact on fuel economy. I would suspect MAF or lambda sensors more for that. Certainly bad injectors do cause delayed starting though and rough idle for first few seconds.

There is possibility of bad coil packs as well but if it runs fine otherwise with no signs of misfire they are perhaps lower down on the list.

I think it’s because of group legal action in the states forcing bmw to do something, over here they get away with leaving their customers in the lurch.

Upgraded intercooler
De cat Exhaust system

I used the MHD Live Gauges to monitor certain parameters.

O2 sensors seemed to show the same values throughout the drive and instantly both responsive.

My mechanic reckons he’s replaced the MAF sensor also.

I have a MAF readings through MHD but not sure what values are ok?

I’ve had no misfires at all.

I’m thinking maybe a leaky injector?

There's no MAF sensor on the N54. The engine has a simulated MAF value which it uses for internal calculations but this MAF value is itself calculated from the pressure sensor on the inlet manifold.

It's probably either HPFP or injectors but you need a log to tell. The log would need to include some full throttle driving, preferably 3rd gear from 3000rpm.

Post your MHD logs and I'll take a look. For diagnosing this you would need to log the following parameters as a minimum:
STFT1 & STFT2
LTFT1 & LTFT2
Rail pressure
Lambda Bank 1 & Lambda Bank 2
Fuel mode
Boost target
Boost
RPM
Throttle position
Accelerator pedal position

Set your logging units to PSI/F rather than BAR/C since I'm more used to seeing those values.

Given then to my local mechanic and he agrees 100%

All booked in for once I get back from holidays.

Looking at O2 sensors fitting/wiring & Downpipe fitting

and high pressure test for leaks.

Will keep you posted on results!

Hopefully it will be a cheap fix!!

Can’t be any worse than a high pressure fuel pump or leaky injectors!

On holiday currently. Cars going in on 6th December to get the O2 sensors checked for poor fitting and downpipe & leak tests around that area.

Will keep you updated 👍🏻
 
Worth a shot but sounds unlikely to me. Maybe you could post the logs up on here in the true forum spirit? BTW, does it exhibit the rough idling when you start it from cold? I only ask because the O2 sensors are ignored under those circumstances anyway.
 
I do have some logs but for the life of me have no idea how to transfer them onto here.🙈

Yes it mainly rough isles at cold starts and is hesitant at the lights, in traffic etc.

Hope to see mechanic on Thursday to have a look at vacuum leaks and exhaust etc

I uploaded the logs to my datazap account for viewing.

My observations were that the HPFP was OK because the rail pressure kept above 1500 during the flat out pull and injectors were healthy because upon lifting off and going into the overrun phase of the engine operation the lambda reading went full range on both banks without any blips, also both banks kept quite tight together. A blip in the lambda reading in the overrun phase would indicate fuel leaking through closed injectors.

The problem is that during high load operations the short term fuel trims are maxing out and the long term trims are high during cruise conditions. The afr readings are also high which is why the fuel trims are trying to compensate by going positive.

The only other people who've had a similar issue with both banks going lean and having maxed out trims fixed their issue either by solving exhaust leaks or replacing O2 sensors. Since Belly recently had catless downpipes installed my first suggestion was to get everything there rechecked.
 
* UPDATE*

This is what the garage has said to me:

Hi Mark

We have had a look at the car this morning.
I can confirm the 02 sensors are in the correct orientation for the cylinder banks - no problem there.
We have pressure tested the system to higher pressure than the smoke test machine and no obvious problems are shown. There is a slight leak on bank 2 turbo inlet pipe but this is unrelated to the fault you are having.
We have however noticed that bank 1 02 sensor is contacting the steering rack quite badly.
I need to ask- are the downpipes that are currently fitted designed for rhd?
I would like to proceed next by ordering a fitting kit for the downpipes (gaskets) and removing them to adjust the 02 sensor placement for clearance.
I'd like to also replace at least the front 02 sensor as I believe with engine twist the 02 sensor is contacting the steering rack and possibly causing damage/false signals?
