296 Wheels

As part of the deal with my e89, I got the set of 296 wheels that the old owner removed. The wheels are in good cosmetic condition, 2 have no cracks,1 has a crack, and one has been welded to a reasonable standard. 1 tyre is done, and the the other two have a bit of life left in - 3-5mm I think the last owner said.

I really like the wheels, but I am not in a position to get them back up to scratch with decent wheels an tyres on the car, and could do with a little extra cash.

Does anyone know if there is much desire for these wheels, and how much they would be worth? or is it so little that I should hang on to them?

Thanks
Chris

Unfortunately these are one of the more easily cracked wheels and this dents their resale. I still have 5 in the garage and refuse to sell them because I feel I'd get little for them. I'd rather keep them in case I need a spare wheel or want to sell the 313s and put 296 back on.

If they are the old type with the non reinforced barrel, they'll still be worth something if they genuinely have no cracks. No idea of their value but I personally would have paid maybe £150 for one. A cracked one, even if repaired is barely worth anything, maybe £50 if you could get a buyer.

If they are the new reinforced ones, I reckon they must be worth £300 each if they are in great condition, as they cost about £500 new.

I sold 2 fronts with no cracks, one welded rear and a cracked rear together with RFT 7mm-8mm left for £460 on Ebay to give you a guide..
Mine were the old style 296s

So there you go, most of that value was the tyres... Its such a shame as these wheels really are stunning with a diamond cut face. Even an old set on non run flats should last a long time. Its the run flats that kill these wheels.

I find the pricing between 18s and 19s interesting : my new 325ms are only slightly cheaper than 296s

Yep they're expensive new but not worth much second hand as they are known for cracks.

The pricing difference between 18 and 19 wheels isn't huge but the price between tyres is!

Manic what is the price difference curious .....

Maniac, where exactly do you put the fifth wheel???

Also,is the fifth 296 a front by any chance?

The fifth is put with the other four, in my garage ;)

I bought a spare rear wheel given if already had two back ones crack (replaced by BMW foc).

Price difference between 18 and 19 inch tyres can be as much as £100 per tyre!!

Maniac,

what wheels did you have on your z4 before you put the 313 on? Looking at maybe getting the 313's that are forsale at stratestone if I can get something for the 296's. Looking at trying to give the car the sport look - very few early e89's were msport, so I chose my car based on the the toys and price.

Much difference in ride with the new wheels - how much could I make if I sold the run flats on them, and put non run flats? are the non runflats cheaper to buy?

Chris

I had 296's and although I loved the look of them, after 3 cracked (on admittedly bad manchester roads) I'd had enough. Having said that, the 313 Performance wheels I have now are lighter and well not many have them on so I've no idea how well these will hold up either. I'm getting non run flat tyres put on this Friday in the hope that the 313's are ok and will be protected by softer rubber. Best to look on ebay for pricing of anything tbh.

Actually this begs the question. Why would you have run flats in the first place? I'm not sure I can see the benefits

Maniac,
If by chance your 313's crack what's your next move? Will BMW be interested as you now have NRFT on?

One worry at a time... You can't live your life worrying about what if's... I got run flats (P Zeros) on last time because BMW were all heavy about non run flats. Sod em now, I'll do what I want. If they get stroppy about non run flats on their wheels, I'll point them to this; http://www.michelin.co.uk/tyres/michelin-pilot-super-sport right at the bottom of the description "Developed with Porsche, BMW M and Ferrari" and let them explain to me why tyres that have been designed with their help, can damage their own rims!

I'll do what I always do if I feel aggrieved anyhow, fight, battle, get people on side, whatever it takes. If I get repeated issues with 19" then I'll sell everything and go 18" or indeed sell the car and never touch another BMW as I've had enough issues to last me a lifetime. My FIAT was more stress free.

I'd love them to explain to me, how softer rim tyres can actually be more harmful than rock hard run flat tyres given non run flats absorb more impact energy and run flats pass this through to the poor old rim. Punch a pillow or punch a wall, you'll soon see which absorbs more energy.

I've been through this with bmw and got a free wheel. It was a 296 with falken non runflat and they said they wouldn't replace the cracked wheel as the tyre was non approved and couldn't be validated as safe. So a quick email to falken to let them know bmw don't think their tyres are safe and they emailed me back with their EU safety certificate / approval for the tyre and when I forwarded this to bmw along with Falkens rather annoyed reply. Hey presto a free replacement wheel immediately.
