296 Alloys Again

BTW, the cracked wheel does have a single scuff mark on it.
Would BMW blame it on the scuff possibly? I don't see how a scuff would cause a wheel to crack technically, but my experience with other car dealership is that they will blame jsut about anything to avoid warranty work?

I would show them the photos of the old and the new wheel, print them out or whatever. Ask them why they changed the design, seems pretty obvious there's an issue with the old wheels imo :)

UPDATE:

Just got a call from the dealer. The result of the run out test confirmed that the rim is still within the tolerance limit so the dealer recommended replacement of the wheel, but BMW have come back and said I need to contribute £60 towards the replacement. Sure, it's not a huge amount of money but I refused to pay it since it's BMW who fitted these faulty wheels.
Will get a call back from the service advisor after he speaks to the service manager. I had to try very hard not to get angry.
They must think I would be happy to get it replaced for £60. I would be happy if they replaced all four rims for £60.

UPDATE:

They've agreed to replace it free of charge as I expect them to.
I must say the dealer has been quite good in dealing with it.
Now I'm worried about the other ones cracking. I'll be sure check if the replaced wheel is the new design or not. I guess one positive that came out of it is that I will no longer have scuff mark on my rear left wheel.

It would seem that the UK dealers with BMW have adopted the policy to change these faulty wheels as my dealer changed one of mine without any fuss or fee. Pity they just don’t change them all given that BMW seem to acknowledge that they are potentially dangerous.

Picked up the car and for now I'm just glad that I can enjoy the car rather than worrying about whether I have fork out hundreds to get my wheels fixed up.
The dealer left a smudge of mud/dirt on my seat though.

Looking at that then, all they've done is moved the inner step out to the inner edge rather than the face. If you look on the original wheel, it steps down just after the spokes, on the new style, the step occurs nearer the inner rim, presumably making that inner step take more load.

**edit: Makes me want to tell BMW to replace the wheels again for this new type!

Manic, I'm with you. I had both rears replaced less than a year ago and have been worrying about them ever since. My car comes out out of warranty in 6 months so I'd like to get my hands on the new design before then.

Yep. I really would like all of mine changed to new design wheels, but I also know BMW would never do it unless I experience repeat failures with these wheels. The service advisor guy knew about the change in design.

Does it only appear to be the rear wheels that crack?

Are the front/rear wheels different sizes?

If not, could you swap them round when the rears have been replaced?

Fronts crack just as easily.....they must have some faith in the new design, as the new revised model seen testing, is with the same 296 wheels....
