296 Alloys Again

UPDATE

After dealer intervention, BMW are making a 50% contribution towards the second wheel as well as paying for the other.

The dealer is discounting the replacement tyres to what looks to be a reasonable price. I could probably have found them cheaper if I spent long enough looking but life is too short.

Overall I am reasonably happy with the outcome.

Very well done, a great outcome.
Both BMW UK and the dealer declined my request for it to be covered under warranty and reiterated the failure is due to the 'potholes/driving style' get out clause.
Can I ask who is the dealer that has assisted you as I would like to bring it to the attention of BMW and the dealer that I use and see what they do or say as a result ?

Its a reasonable outcome but where is their evidence that impact has caused the crack?

No evidence offered or asked for but I am happy that the dealer took it as far as I could reasonably expect them to with BMW and between BMW and the dealer I have an outcome I am happy with.

My last car was a VXR8 that freak circumstances resulted in needing a replacement rear disc when the opposite disc was un-marked. Vauxhall would not budge from £750 plus vat and fitting and the dealer was not interested in helping. This time I feel that the dealer is on my side and BMW have at least contributed.

Hi BMW have just replaced under warranty my 2 rear 296s i have just taken all my 296s off and replaced with another style in matt black along with non runflat tyres.
My 2 rears are brand new only fitted on car for 3 days ! they have bridgestone runflats fitted legal but not great prob about 2/3 mm tread
Was hoping to sell complete set fronts have virtully new runflats on. But may consider splitting if of interest to you let me know
cheers Gary

The more pictures of the reinforced type the better I'd say, can be usefull for anyone dealing with the issue, to show their BMW dealer :)

Waiting for wheels to get back to me next weekend will then post them up i beleive they are the new reinforced type

I have one of each type, original and revised style, on the rear of our E89, I'll post some pictures up tomorrow to show the differences.

Assuming the reinforced version of the 296 is heavier, mixing up two different types could be bad for the handling/balance of the car.

Can anybody comment on this?

Ah there's that assumption word.. You're assuming the weight is different. If it is I could imagine its marginal and makes no difference. Equally they could have altered the design in a way where there's no weight difference.

In any event BMW are replacing them singulary.

Here are the two rear 296 style wheels on our Z4. I wasn't properly aware of the issues with these wheels prior to purchasing an AUC, when I did my first wheel check after purchase I found that both rear wheels had previously been replaced, one with another original style 296 wheel and one with the new style 296 wheel on different dates.

Looking at that then, all they've done is moved the inner step out to the inner edge rather than the face. If you look on the original wheel, it steps down just after the spokes, on the new style, the step occurs nearer the inner rim, presumably making that inner step take more load.

**edit: Makes me want to tell BMW to replace the wheels again for this new type!

Well guess what. I took my newly acquired Z4 35i with 296 rims to get the left rear tyre checked because Nick here thought he saw a nail in the tyre.
No nail found, but the rim has been cracked!
Not exactly what I wanted to find a couple of days after buying one.
I have contacted the dealer and they will get it looked at, but they will have to ask BMW for a goodwill replacement as extended warranty, which the car has, doesn't cover alloy wheels.
I'm hoping and praying the dealer will help me with this.

I would definitely be asking them why this wasn't detected as part of the AUC checks?

UPDATE:
Dropped the car off at BMW this morning.
Fingers crossed they will cough up the replacement wheel (as they should).
The service advisor did say that I shouldn't have any problem, but I'm just worried they will blame the non RFT, which would be ludicrous.
The car has had non RFT conti contactsport 5P tyres put on only a couple of weeks ago. So either the guy fitting the tyres failed to spot the crack or it happened even with the normal tyres it.
Such a nice looking wheels, but such a PITA.

Interesting to see the difference between the wheels, the rough stress models I ran last year indicated that the highest stress concentrations and thus movement were just where they have beefed the wheel up

BTW, the cracked wheel does have a single scuff mark on it.
Would BMW blame it on the scuff possibly? I don't see how a scuff would cause a wheel to crack technically, but my experience with other car dealership is that they will blame jsut about anything to avoid warranty work?

technically I dont know, but if they did, ask them how many wheels get kerbed on our roads...and why dont they all crack?
