Ok, as some of you will know, I'm currently deciding what to do with my 2 and a half year old sDrive 23i... basically keep it and extend the warranty, or... :?
One thing that has been worrying me is would BMW pay to replace one of the 19" wheels if the car was out of the 3 years warranty, but covered by an extended comprehensive warranty.
I thought I would see what BMW Customer Services had to say on the matter, so I emailed them:

...One thing that is concerning me is that several other Z4 owners have had issues with the 296 style 19" wheels cracking, and I believe that they have been replaced under factory warranty with no charge, as long as there are no signs that the wheels have been damaged by a pothole.
My car is fitted with the 296 style 19" wheels, and so far I have had no issues with them. I wonder if you can clarify whether they would be covered under the Comprehensive extended warranty if they were to crack after 3 years of ownership?
I appreciate your response on this, and it will help inform my decision on whether I will keep the car and extend the warranty, which is what I would like to do, or whether it would make sense in the longer term to sell it to avoid possible unexpected future costs.

I can advise that alloy wheels are not covered under warranty, however, as with any damaged component, should the defect be due to a manufacturing issue and not external influences, your local BMW Approved Dealership are able to assess the case for a goodwill contribution. Goodwill is seen as reciprocal and we would expect owners to have shown their goodwill by purchasing and maintaining their vehicles within our dealer network.
The vehicles age, mileage, purchase and service history plus an Insured Warranty cost is all taken into consideration when assessing claims of this nature.
I trust that this information clarifies your enquiry, however, please do not hesitate to contact me, if I can be of further assistance.
Yours sincerely

I'm taking the view that if they develop a crack, and the dealer observes that the car has been looked after, not particularly high mileage (only just hit 10K), no signs of pothole damage, under warranty (factory or comprehensive extended) and been serviced by local dealer, then hopefully they would be replaced free of charge.
This has sort of put my mind at rest... but can those of you that have had them replaced actually confirm whether BMW states that they are being replaced due to a "manufacturing issue".
