28i - Possible Boost Issue?

Hi guys,

Driving home tonight with the roof down in sports mode and manual mode and whilst off the throttle I thought I heard a bit of a "dump valve" noise.

When I pressed on it didn't sound the same, you normally hear a bit of spooling etc plus it didn't feel as fast.

I've tried to look for any lose hoses etc but can't see anything.

Then I booted it again and it felt ok, then the next time it felt flat again.

Is there any common faults like this? Could the "dump valve" be sticking?

Could it be the exhaust valve jammed closed? Or not opening on occasion? It seems fine one minute then it's very muted on downshifts another.

My thought went to an intermittent sticking wastgate Steve, if you can get to it spray some releasing fluid on it, it won't hurt, might smell a bit is all. Worth a try before you open your purse.. :)

That would definitely make sense! Thank you!

Any ideas where the waste gate is!?

Hi Steve, your car either has a pneumatic wastegate actuator or a solonoid controlled one depending on date of manufacture-either can go wrong.
They are located on the l/h side of the engine as the turbo is part of the exhaust manifold

I'm thinking actuator rod linkage as well. look on google where the turbo is and spray fluid in that area, I doubt you'll be able to get your head in there, or use a mirror,. The manifold will smoke afterwards but it'll soon dry off. That's not a long term solution but if it frees up for a day or two you'll know it's that.

I would use and OBC reader - is there an owner near you with a carly?

Quick 10 minutes - will help to find out what the issue is.

Right, definitely the waste gate arm so thank you for that suggestion!

It was "out" when I first went to the car this morning, after about 30 seconds of driving it went back to normal, it's now returning and feels fine.

I'll keep my eye on it!
