Actually the confusion takes time. When the car first came out you had the 23i, 30i, 35i in SE trim only... that was all you had to worry about before a hundred options.
But even then to an average guy in the street they will be a 2.3L engine, a 3.0L engine and a 3.5L engine instead of 1 x 2.5L and 2 x 3.0L.
 
As well as at the dealer where my X5 is classed as a 4 litre on the paperwork.
