28i Opinion?

I would like to compare mine vs a 28i, since I have wider wheels/tyres/non-rft (same tyre as M5), eibach and geo setup. Going to get the MFactory LSD too so the power out of corners will be better. I'd say the 35is needs less speed on turn in, then a power out into the next straight.

I would be very surprised if the 28i was all over me on a normal circuit.

Maybe the next meetup should be at a track?

Just remembered that I met a Croatian chap who has a 28i but we didn't go out together yet, plus we have a circuit local to us, Grobnik.

Think this calls for a challenge!

Great find Stuart, top man.

If it goes ahead it's going to be very interesting to compare the two, the line at the end of that 'it's better to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow' sums it up for me, I've said before I can't use the power available in the 35is where I live, that's not to say I won't miss it but I'm getting a feeling letting the big 6 go might not be such a wrench...or am I just trying to justify it in my head...

Cheers for the post mate.

Donnington September 2016 BMW Owners Club Track Day

http://www.bmwcarclubgb.uk/events/2016/09/trackday__donington_park_circuit.html

My expectations that you have the legs and pull out of corners better than me - but My advantage would be lighter car and been able to break later - however you seem to have better break pads - be very interesting.

Not so sure, with the huge discs of the 35iS and the upgraded pads/fluid.

150 isn't a big advantage (just over 9% difference?), especially as I'm so slim and good looking

I'm running Cool Carbon pads, but there's nothing stopping you uprating either - so it would be interesting to see that's for sure. I know that MX5's with turbos/superchargers run rings around bigger/faster cars. Lotus too - so weight is a huge thing. Although the GTR confuses me :|

As I understand Cool Carbon are better than my Yellows

But be very interesting as a comparison - can you do donnington?

Have you done Track days before?

Also I am tall and overweight - so you have the advantage with that as well.

Btw its brakes on a car.

You break a dish or break your leg.

Interesting discussion and comparisons going on. As you were boys.

Thanks my dyslexia is kicking in again.

Funny story when at College doing Law - I miss spelt prosecution to prostitution - told my lecture they are the same thing - great exceptions but they both screw you for money.

Another thing I thought of and would be a negative (not sure if other versions are similar as never tested them practice) but I find the standard brakes on my 28i fade after some spirited driving, not a problem day to day but a bit of a disappointment when comparing them to "lesser" cars I have owned.

On a trackday I'd be concerned with using the OEM set up that's for sure. :driving:

You might not miss the additional performance of the 35is if you just pootle around but you will miss the noise of the N54. Even under slight acceleration the engine makes some great sounds.

I think if I had to take a step backwards in displacement I would go for something more economical than the 28i. Losing 100bhp and not getting any increase in MPG would sting!

Fuel economy is not too high on the important list, but any gain, which there will be, is welcome. I'll be gaining a weight and handling advantage. The noise I will 100% miss, can't have it both ways unfortunately. The weight difference will make up some of the power loss, 0-60, if you're into that sort of thing, is 5.7, that's only half a second off a 35i with a reportedly crisper turn in. If you don't get hung up on it not being a 6 I'm struggling to see a downside tbh. What would you suggest apart from a Boxster?

Cheers for the post, any views are interesting. :)

Hopefully the move from a nice sounding straight six to a clattery, piston slapping 4 cyl won't be too irksome especially on those cold mornings

From been an previous N54 driver my MPG increased on average 10 MPG so in percentage terms that 50% increase!!!!
On a good run - you can easily achieve 50+ MPG - but I purchase a economical car so I could drive quick and not be an issue - rather having an uneconomical car and having to drive frugal.

The N54 has an great sound - but post 2012 N20 do not have a unpleasant sound and do not deserve such remarks

Does this sound like a "clattery, piston slapping 4 Cyl"

Dare I say MX5 or GT86

John, maybe you could try something left field, such as a TT-S or 370z ?

No it's a Z4 or a Boxster Stuart, I can't get any enthusiasm for the TT or 370z quite honestly, that may be narrow minded and a mistake granted. Neither float my boat.

MX5 are cracking cars, had a try on a few occasions, just feel too small, which is weird as I'm only 5'6". GT86 is not a roadster, that aspect is crucial, as simple as that. :)
