27 families destroyed and for what?

In all the other causes of death, the US government, regardless of side, have been trying to take steps to reduce these figures, with the exception of gun control.

I do believe that it's not guns that kill, people kill, the hatred we have inside for others, the problem as I see it is that it is to easy to obtain a gun legally and probably even easier to get one illegally. Yet I do not believe that there is an easy answer to this problem.

However the guy who said that if the children had been armed they could have defended themselves, highlights my fear that as a species we are fundamentally flawed and we will probably destroy us and our planet in the name of greed

That whole attitude of "arm everybody" is the type of insanity that makes me fear for the species as a whole.

It starts with knives, and escalates.

hi all interesting reading all this, its is the old saying guns don't kill its the people that do. In the UK handguns are more available on the streets then ever before, gone are the days of the sawn off, your more likely find a used Glock or a Sig for a grand now or even a Mac 10.

Semi auto's are available more in the USA but each state has so many laws regarding the concealed carry the open carry and the assault rifle how can they sort this out? Now I have to admit I watch American Guns about the shop Gunsmoke in Colorado and when ever someone comes in to buy a gun form 4473 and there ID is sometimes mentioned so they are strict forms to be filled. which means are more of them illegal guns.

So how can you stop them?

In the UK the gang culture its more like if they have a gun we better have one where it stops I don't know.

you will always get the fanatic/mental unstable and dysfunctional who will try an out do the last one.

Its so sad that those children should have been thinking of Santa but what they got was the a 20 year old carrying weapons into what is supposed to be a safe place for them

Stuart. No offense taken. Guns are a real hot button issue for sure. I do get a little on edge when discussing guns. Because in America. The anti gun folks have tried to boil it down to catchy little slogans. Such as. If you support gun rights you support murder. Things like that. It has long since devolved into a contest of name calling and inserting words in others mouths by the anti gun lobby. Your view requires that I give up a right that is established in the Constitution of my country. My view does not require that you do any thing.

I would disagree about the numbers and stats. As most if not all anti gun folk will always point out how many have been killed by people with guns. Yet if a pro gun person talks of numbers killed by any other means. That will be viewed by anti gunners as a invalid argument. A little one sided I'd say.

To quote you "The fact is that something has gone badly wrong and there are now so many weapons out there that almost nothing will fix that. They're too easily available and that's not right."
Yes there are a lot of guns out there. Estimates are that there are 200,000,000 in the USA alone. I will ask this. Banning guns will do what? All the guns that are in existence will not magically go away. And as guns are simple to produce. Any experienced machinist can make one. All you need is a lathe, Drill press, Milling machine. They are not going away even if they do get banned. So what's our next best alternative.

The answer is in us as people. It's in how we raise our kids to be responsible and respectful to the laws and other people. We need to not be so reliant upon the government for our lively hood. Our US constitution states that we should have life, Liberty, And the pursuit of happiness. You notice how it says the pursuit of happiness and not that you are guaranteed happiness. We have been taught that the government is there to provide this happiness. And that's not possible. And so after 50 years of the "war on poverty" through the welfare programs in the US. We still have almost the same percentage of poverty. So people start to feel helpless. Of course the politicians are quick to blame others. What does this have to do with guns you might ask. It's about the attitude that has been generated in the hearts and minds of the people who have been told for so long that all the answers were to be found from more government. So having a population of kids over the last few decades that were raised by anonymous people in day care centers, or sat in front of the television. Have been fed with the line that nothing is your fault. Your problems are someone else's fault and that is dangerous. Even in sports for kids. They all get a trophy. They learn that there are no losers. And then they get into the real world as a young adult and realize they were fed a line of crap by their parents and the schools and the government. They find that there are losers in life. And they don't know how to deal with that. All the authoritative people in their lives had led them down the garden path. Only to be thrown through the garden gate into the desert. They don't know who to turn to. It's not cool to go to church to seek help. So whats left. Drugs, Alcohol, Gangs, Suicide? All of which lead to a dead end. In the end. It's all about the state of the mind.

I'm a very close neighbour to my American friends, but I would certainly never consider moving there, based on their lack of gun control policies alone...

 They probably don't want you anyway. If you can believe history, I think they sent their cousins packing a few hundred years ago. And I think they had firearms. Could be wrong. :poke: I've also noticed perusing articles on google, that the UK has one of the highest crime rates in the world. Can anyone verify that? :(

The total crime rate is slightly higher at 85 per 1000 compared to 80 per 1000 in the US. Gun crime is lower though. Guess we might be first cousins with the UK.

Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

Slick. Plays right into my feeling of the media along with politicians having a much more negative influence on society than they should. I have avoided watching any news beyond the initial basics about this horrible event.

I never read the gun laws thread and I don't want to get into an argument here. But I'm sorry bigdog, your argument just does nothing to even put the slightest doubt in my mind about what gun laws should be.

I know you have a military background and therefor no doubt represent the large percentage of responsible, sensible American gun owners. However, my heart just bleeds every time I hear about some nutter bringing an untimely end to the more often than not young life's of innocent people at some school, cinema, college etc.

Other countries have similar or even more lax gun laws yet they manage to avoid having these horrific incidents with such alarming regularity. Perhaps as you say it is something that needs to be done about society as a whole, if you have a messed up society then the worst thing you can do is arm them with semi automatic weapons which should be completely unnecessary in any civilised society. Whatever the cause, my thoughts and heart felt sympathies are with the families of the children that were so cruelly taken from them today.

What SHOULD the gun laws be? And since when has a law kept a law breaker from breaking the law. I have no doubt this idiot in America knew that killing was illegal. Yet did it anyway.
It is most definitely about how society has changed. So we should work on that. Solve the problem with people willing to lash out in the most violent way possible. And not be so focused on the particular instrument that an evil person uses.

Why did the US founding fathers write the second amendment? Look at the federalist papers about citizens owning guns. The very men who created our country realized that those in power will always have a tendency to want more power and the wealth that goes with said power. Our founding fathers made sure that the average citizen had the means to topple such tyrants. The fact that whether a society is civilized or not is not the issue concerning guns and their ownership in our constitution. It was to the founding fathers. An insurance policy against the very government they founded should that government become uncivilized towards it citizens.

My military training had nothing to do with the values and respect of the laws that I have. That was taught to me by my parents. And then reinforced by my 20 years in the military. I do understand what you mean though. The fact is that the vast majority of guns owners are very responsible.

To Stuart and Carol.
I respect your views. Please don't try and diminish my views by putting words in my mouth that I didn't speak nor post. The constitution gives me the right to bare arms. That's all the justification that is needed. And until the citizens vote to change the constitution it will remain a "right"
I only put those figures up as an illustration. Pointing out that for all the death and destruction caused by all the items above the gun homicides level. All those deaths seem to be a non issue. And we willingly accept them. And if we can willingly accept that level of death from those things (in the name of freedom). Then why can't we accept (in the name of freedom) that some times a bad person will use a gun to do bad things. If we just made Fags, Cars, alcohol, Baseball bats, drugs illegal. We could have saved nearly 800,000 lives. Instead the government talks about making guns illegal. I believe for reasons stated in my prior post. Even though more die from those other instruments than guns. That is a fact. You can see two paragraphs above about why we were given the "right" in our constitution to own guns.

I would hope that neither of you would deny that a lot of the problems concerning violent acts such as this one has more to do with societal attitudes and values, Or lack thereof. Than it does with guns. Quite frankly and sadly. We have a rather large population of cruel heartless people that don't care about anyone or anything to include themselves. It's my contention that guns did not create that view. We the people, our government, And the media created those attitudes. But a lot of folks only focus on the tool.

Point missed i think. I wasn't saying that if you make guns illegal any nutter considering a killing spree would think "better not do it because guns are naughty". I was merely saying that if you have a large number of people who are fucked in the head in your society, as America do. Then the worst thing you can do is surround them with relatively easily accessible weaponry of any description.

I believe at last count America had something like 90 guns per 100 residents. That's nearly double the next nearest country Serbia, closely followed by Yemen and Switzerland. Also worth noting the count in these countries is down to the fact that these countries have or until recently had national service. They also have much, much smaller firearm mortality rates than America.

There was an interview on the radio with a 7 year old boy who had been in this school when this atrocity took place. In the interview he said that he heard gunshots that didn't sound like our army gunshots or our police gunshots or our school ammo control gunshots (i don't even know what that last one means). I don't think it's right that any child of that age not living in a war zone should be able to distinguish between different types of gunshot.

a very personal opinion :!:

I saw that. It's 2005 stats and since then, gun crime in the US has gone down slightly. Doesn't change my view (which I suspect is the same as yours) but as Bigdog and a few others are open minded enough to have a sensible debate, so should we be.

Here's a good article from a favourite journalist and blogger. Pretty well balanced overall

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/world-news/why-americas-cowboys-putting-down-their-guns-1494126

Good article? He may have some points. But then he goes off point and starts the America bashing. Remember in a prior post I made about how the gun debate has devolved into name calling? He says at first that this terrible senseless act wasn't caused by any thing! Then he changes tact and goes on to say that it was caused because Americans are collectively insane. And we (Americans) are all Stupid, And willfully blind. I have grown accustomed to being hated for being an American by the likes of this blogger and a majority of the worlds peoples. So I generally just ignore it and go about my business.

Yet he is correct to point out. Most Americans do fear losing their (few remaining) freedoms. Because we have gone through a lot to get them. Just as the British went through a lot to keep them in WWII. He is also correct in pointing out that if we were to hand over our guns. We wouldn't lose a single freedom. Well at least not at first. We Americans very strongly believe in the concept of the slippery slope. Give an inch, They will take a mile. Take the federal income tax. The original legislation stated that it was to only be one percent of one's income. Within 2 years the government doubled that to 2 percent. And so it went till the top tax rate then hit 94%. And of course the government then added to the income tax an employment tax, unemployment tax, Social security tax, Medicare tax, Medicaid tax, Vehicle excise tax and so on. Yet when the government first asked for permission to enact the income tax. They made no mention of the fact that they had by enacting said income tax given them selves the ability to lawfully add multitudes of other taxes. Opps! Had the folks known that. They would have told the feds to stick it. But the feds did what the feds always do. They lie. The point is that when the government says if you let them (the government) pass a law they will only take a little (whether it be your freedom or monies). In the end they ALWAYS manage to take more than they originally stated they would. Then proceed to waist it. Then take more. That is the slippery slope. But should the American government try to take too many of Americas freedoms away. The Americans have no qualms about taking up arms. What that level is. I have no idea. That is the only reason our government wants to take our guns. It very well could be faulty thinking. These are the things a lot of Americans think about when looking at the right to bare arms. Look at what one of our founding fathers and third president had to say. Jefferson advocated rebellion and violence when necessary. In a letter to James Madison on January 30, 1787, Jefferson wrote, "A little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical...It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."Similarly, in a letter to Abigail Adams on February 22, 1787 he wrote, "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions that I wish it to be always kept alive. It will often be exercised when wrong, but better so than not to be exercised at all". In another letter in 1787, Jefferson wrote: "And what country can preserve its liberties, if the rulers are not warned from time to time, that this people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms." It's always the what if's that scare us Americans. And so right or wrong. For the time being. Guns will remain a part of American culture.

True. But I will personally never understand why keeping guns is more important than those 10.000 lives. A few days/weeks ago I saw this article in the newspaper that for the first time in years there was 1 day in New York that no-one got shot... Over here it's just the opposite, it's news when someone gets shot and it almost never happens.

OK, we have to be honest here, our country is a million times smaller. I suppose you have to be an American to really understand it...

Anyway, we're actually going off topic: in the first place it's about those 27 families and what they have lost. I feel for them, could not imagine what it is like :-(

American government , how to get around the constitution ban bullets ! Than you can have as many guns as you can point at each other.
I for one relies that's its society not guns that kill people and it would be impossible to ban all guns , no president is that brave it would be like committing political suiside but ,

My view is simple , we all have at some time filled out a risk assessment form , to reduce risk off injury or death , simple remove semi and automatic weapons thus reducing the risk .It won't remove the problem but would certanly reduce the death toll , than maybe half of those children may still be alive if not more .

No, this is precisely what we should talk about. All of these out side influences do have an effect.
And yes. I do realize that it might be hard for those in other countries to understand. To be honest. I don't understand the propensity for the British to subject themselves to such high levels of government monitoring through the CCTV systems. In my American eyes. I doesn't seem to work. As your total crime rate is higher than in the USA. Or the fact that even though the British are some of the most highly taxed people on earth. Your government is about as broke as ours.

Much of our violent problems stem from the following. Of course this is not a complete list. The problems are as varied and as numerous as the people.
It IS the way in which we as parents influence our children through indeferance to what they do in their spare time. It IS the way a constant barrage of violence on T.V. Influences children with behavioral problems and numbs them to such violence. It IS the way in which the government promises to TAKE CARE OF YOU for a vote. Then doesn't. It IS about how the media literally glorifies such killers by plastering their names accross the air waves. Thus giving them their fifteen minutes of fame. It IS about the children being taught that there are no losers in life. Then having to face the cold hard facts that that was a lie. All of these things can influence certain personality types to accept that their life is a lost cause. The parents are to busy accumulating things to really give proper guidance. The government doesn't care as you are just a tax number to them. The media doesn't care about influencing in a bad way through all the negativity and glorification of violent killers. They are just after ratings (money). The most popular video games are the ones where you shoot and kill for hours on end. And it's not cool to be religious. In the end. A lot of these troubled people feel they have no where to turn. And then lash out in a big way.
