255 tyres on front

Hi all,

I’ve managed to somehow put some 255 width tyres on my front alloys (bmw 326 style) which I think are 8j. Obviously not ideal and a mistake by me, but they seem to be ok after the first drive.

Main question is, will this be a problem for me, or more importantly, is it dangerous? Or will I just get slightly worse handling etc?

I plan to change them out at some point, but want to get a bit of use out of them first. If it helps, I don’t drive the car hard at all.

You may get several views..

An 8.5J is the minimum width acceptable according to most calculators

A 9j or 9.5j are the recommended sizes

So your 8J is at the very least extremely bad practice IMHO..

It may be / probably is construed as illegal under construction and use regulations

In the event of an accident for sure your insurance is void if this was noted

The only time that would be not the case of the manufacturer said it was permissible..

Front wheels are the worse possible placement due to the cornering forces as you steer...maybe the tyre will pop off the rim..sudden deflation mid corner should be amusing...


The argument that you don’t drive hard is not relevant..you may have to make a sudden high energy manoeuvre to avoid something etc

So I think you should remove them immediately and replace them with something that’s legal ..
 
In rain, you’ll more likely aquaplane..... A past TT I had running 265’s was IMO dangerous in heavy rain
