245 tyres on rear rims?

I have 255/35/18 tyres on the rear and 225/40/18 on the front. The fronts are stretched a little the rears fit easily

255 winter tyres are pretty rare so will 245 tyres fit on the rear rims?

If so would it be best to go with 245/35 or 245/40?

Rear rims are 8.5’’ right?

Just looking for more winter tyre options

Opinions and experiences welcome

Thanks

I thought the official BMW winter tyres sizes were all 225 width on all 4 corners, so I’d either stick to that, or go to the 245/40 for the extra sidewall flex.

If it were me I’d consider a second set of wheels? Maybe a square set of 17’s? Like mentioned? Then they can be dedicated winter wheels and tyres.

8.5” width normally... but depends on what alloys you have. Style 224’s are 9” for example.

Even rears at 255 do appear stretched sometimes depending on what brand of tyres you have. The 245’s will defo give a slightly stretched appearance, but there’s no issue with using them at all.

Also worth noting is that any curb damage will be exponentially increased with less rubber (245) to protect... accidents aren’t intended but do happen unfortunately

Good luck with the wheels

I'll have to disagree with this. Look up any tyre size calculators online and they all say that 255 is the absolute maximum recommended width on an 8.5j rim, with 235 or 245 the recommendation

255 wide certainly doesn't look stretched on an 8.5j rim. I'd argue they're very close to looking too wide and overhanging the rim if anything.

All subjective tho? It really depends what tyres you have? Also if its got an extra rim protector (since I'm sure no tyres offer this as standard)? I didn't say carte blanche that 255's are stretched... since mostly 255's are most definitely not stretched...

Do you mean stretched or plump?

255 looks fine on a 9J but bear in mind different brands the actual width of a '255' varies.

Thanks for the comments guys

Well I got them although they aren’t yet fitted, 225/40/18 for front 245/40/18 for back

Vredestein in wintrac xtreme with 6-7mm left great condition just £230 on eBay for all 4

I don’t get paid if I can’t get to work and commute at 6:30 in the morning when it’s still pitch black and icy, I feel so much safer and capable with my winter tyres on

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...
