That was probably as good as the cars economy would get.

I had an E92 320d Sport Plus for 8 months before picking up my Z4 20i Msport two weeks ago. I've just done 1200 miles and hopefully the economy and performance will improve but these are my observations so far. ( Having actually owned/driven both rather than preconceived guesswork... )
The handling on my 20i MS is much better than the 23i, it turns in sharper, feels more lithe and is more like a sports car than a sporty cruiser. ( Both are on the same 19" wheels although the 20i has the delete M suspension )
The engine makes a nice throaty noise, not as good as a six but perfectly acceptable in a sports car, the power response is better at lower revs and the engine seems more willing to increase revs giving a more urgent feel to the car than the six. I loved the noise of the 23i but in all other respects the 20i seems a better powerplant. I was pretty surprised at that.
Economy... well its not as good as I expected, but it seems to be more adversely affected by how you drive it than the 23i. In the 23i when the fuel strikes were on I had to drive the car on my commute with the sensitivity of having my favourite toy beneath the accelerator pedal, gentle acceleration averaged 60mph on the motorway and got 41mpg.. it was the journey from hell enlivened only by having the top down and a good stereo!That was probably as good as the cars economy would get.
With the 20i on 1050 miles I set off to work and kept to 75 mph indicated ( slowing with some 50mph roadworks ) and drove normally, averaged 67mph and got 42.5 mpg.The stop/start on the car works unobtrusively - although it never came on before 400 miles - and around town the consumption seems to be about 29mpg where I would have got 23mpg in the six. It appears that a sympathetically driven 20i can be much more economical. Having said that it is still nowhere near as good as the official figures!
So far, if driven briskly the 20i offers me about 10% better mpg than the 23i, but this margin appears to be much bigger around town or when driven at or below 75-ish on the motorway. ( I would add that were it possible to comment on 90 I would say the gap appears smaller again.. :roll: )
Overall I would say the 20i MS is a better car than my old 23iMS, but I prefer the sportier lighter feel of it, it reminds me of my original Z4 2.5Si Sport but without the skittishness!
