23i noisy lifter

Hi all,

Well for a while now my car has had a tapping noise, it occurs after the car has been driven a short distance from cold and then restarted a short while after. Quiet when its cold or above 80 deg C oil temp.
So, took it to RL Motor Services, Plympton a BMW indy who diagnosed a noisy lifter (you can youtube the subject to have a listen).
I have a warranty Direct policy, car is 2009 with 89K miles.
RL told Warranty Direct that the cost was £1200 plus VAT for all labour (10 hours plus), gaskets and 24 new lifters, oil and filter!
Warranty Direct told them 'remove all the lifters, replace the worn one'.
RL told them 'that is no guarantee of a permanent or definitive fix' and would they like to 'pay for the job 24 times'??!

Big thanks to RL who are on the game and also Warranty Direct for a rapid and positive decision.

So Warranty direct are giving me £1159 and work goes ahead next Wednesday.

:D :D :D :D :D

If i was a betting man id say that solution won't cure the noise :o do update the thread though as very interested in the outcome

Tapping noise engine first thing i would do is change the oil making sure it's the right spec. I have always used Mobil 1 New Life 0W40 without problems from 29k to present 81k.
Replace and give the engine a good blast, i read somewhere else.
I had similar buying a MGTF after a while engine rattled. Replaced oil with the lightest allowable and the tappet rattles stopped.

Been through all the easy fix options, different oil viscosities - engine flush - the 'priming' procedure etc.
This is the last option, whilst the top iof the head is in bits, cams out etc everything will be checked including inlet cam vanos journal where the cam runs in the head with no shell bearing, unlike the exhaust cam (probably the biggest mistake in this engines manufacture).
Any damage there and a new head will be fitted as well.

Work is now delayed till next week as UK is four lifters short of the total needed so they are coming from Germany.
At least I will get them before the brexit fu_kwittery kicks in and put all the prices up :-)

Got the car back yesterday, had a delay for parts availability in the UK.
The car is transformed, it is as quiet as a watch on tick over, smoother to drive and ticks over a lot better than before.

RL did a cracking job including negotiating on my behalf with Warranty Direct.

Total cost for 24 lifters, cam cover gasket, oil, filter, 5 bolts! new brake lamp and labour £1500
Warranty Direct paying £1100 of that so I am a happy chappie.
